The chronicle of Eger Tobacco Factory
The cigar factory
It was ordered that a pipeline should be built between that village and the tobacco factory ten kilometres away. In the process of assigning the wells the Treasury bought up four and a half hectares of land in Tagos field on Baráthegy in Felsőtárkány whose wells were expected to supply a daily output of 300 hectolitres. The spring water of the land purchased by the Treasury was collected by means of underground cisterns, so- called galeries, through two reservoirs which fed a third main reservoir. It was then fed through pipelines laid under private lands (after way-leave had been obtained), the public road between Felsőtárkány and Eger, across Széchenyi and Gimnázium streets in the city, and finally the market-place, into the 10 cubic-metre tank of the water- tower in the tobacco factory. The water-tower had come to life which was an event that deserved an impromptu celebration organized by the workers. General feeling turned against the factory and factory workers which gave Director Boltizár plenty to think about.
