RESUME : (The application of the dialectics of form and matter in Chapter I in Marx's If« Capital) The paper examines a particular field of the Marxist application of the dialectical method in Chapter I in The Capital . The relation between form and matter is not disussed systematically in the work examined, however , its application is traceable throughout the work. The paper focuses on Marx's interpretation of the commodity as totality, which is in ail cases the unity of form and matter, and at the same time, this concept of unity is not to be identified with an "abstract harmony", but it is to represent differences as well. These differences make the development of commodities possible. It is balance arid struggle, unity arid diversity in the development of the product becoming commodity that prove proves the objective dialectics as well as the material basis for subjective dialectics. In this paper an attempt is made to give an outline of a categorical examination of form and matter, in the course of which the differences in the substance of product and commodity are focussed on. The choice of the topic is maintained by the tact that the Marxist theory of form and matter is of great importance in assessing the evolution and progress of society. The Capita l of Marx appears to be most appropriate for the purpose for it is not so much the philosophical laws inherent in the progress of economy but those of society that are discussed in it.
