- 135 ­HALMAI ISTVÁN AZ EGRI ÉRSEKI JOGAKADÉMIA A JOGI FELSŐOKTATÁS RENDSZERÉBEN A SZÁZADFORDULÓIG ABSTRACT: Academies of law, being important workshops, played a unique and special part in the system of organized higher education of law in Hungary from the beginning of the 10 t h till the middle of the 20 t hc. , especially till World War I. The establishment and strengthening of these colleges of law, the development of their special features is the result of firm denominational efforts on one hand and of measures of the state enacted mainly after the Ratio educationis on the other hand. The state assigned an important part to these institutions in "producing" experts in jurisdiction and administration, mainly because of the characteristics of these schools, having been orientated on practical training. This role of theirs had been kept until in fact the turn of the century, independently of the anomalies of state life and of the Hungarian system of education of that time both in its organization and contents, and in spite of the fact that after the compromise of 1867 the so-called "honorácior" traditions (as Erdei calls them), which had been characteristic of all intellectual professions but especially of the legal profession, had been gradually diminishing.
