RÉSUMÉ COMMON CONSCIOUSNESS AND RELIGIOUSNESS (DR. VILMOS TÖTH) The author investigates in his paper, not aiming at completeness, the role of religiousness in people's everyday thought in our present social circumstances. He points to the fact that the roots of religion in society have disappeared basically in the course of social changes, but religiousness is, though to a lesser and lesser extent, still present in our everyday life. The paper dwells on some aspects of this problem on the basis of observations made in a fact-finding investigation, pointing out that there are both objective and subjective causes and conditions for the survival of religiousness. It emphasizes that no rapid and automatic disappearance of religion and religiousness is to be expected, and that the reduction of their role and influence needs co-ordinated comprehensive activity. The conditions of existence and human communities are to be improved, and the efficiency of temporal education should be increased, in which stress is not to be laid on negation but on the corroboration of socialistic conditions, on making people conscious of them and urging people to accept the new standards both mentally and emotionally. 54
