CALVIN SYNOD HERALD — 2 — REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA PAST EVENTS AND NEWS NUGGETS The Ligonier Days: September 2, 3, 4 — Church Workers Conference and Ministerial meeting for Hungarian pastors in Ligonier, PA was held. These traditional Ligonier Meetings are always held on days following Labor- Sunday. The high-light this year was the presence and the lecture of Rev. Ferenc Nagy, president of the Ministerial Association of Hungary. Main topic: the II. World Convention of Hungarian Reformed Churches in Hungary in June 21- 24, 1991. * The Annual District Conference of Presbyters and Church-Workers of the Lakeside Section was held in the First Hungarian Reformed Church at Cleveland (Ohio) on September 30, Sunday, at 2 p.m. President: Ernest Maxim, chiefelder of West-side Hungarian Reformed Church of Cleveland was presiding. Topic for the conference was a concern to us all, Church Growth and Evangelism. The theme for this year was: “Are we lights in a closet, or beacons on a hill?”, with Deut. 4:10b as our scripture for the day. The Conference was held 12 days before October 12, the actual date of the very first Hungarian Reformed Church Service in Cleveland on Oct. 12, 1890 by the first minister in U.S.A. in the person of Rev. G. Jurányi. Emphasis was on the Centennary of that historic event! Oct. 12, 1890 was the Magyar Pentecost in America. Cleveland became the Jerusalem for Hungarians in America. Lecture on topic was deleivered by Rev. Áron Elek. CALVINUCDAI n synod ritryALL/ Reformátusok Lapja OfftaU O^m 04 TS. CUvm IfHj-lkM CM W CkrU hwfcl In I too Editor in Chief: ZOLTÁN D. Delegates were treated to a sumptuous dinner of spicy beef stew (pörkölt) and dessert (strudle). May God bless and preserve such traditional hospitality. The host pastor, Rev. Stephen Nyeste, opened the meeting with devotions based upon the role of women within the church and family. The business meeting was concentrated mainly on the financial status of the Calvin Synod. Discussions focused on how to best improve the situation. Recomendation to that effect will be presented at the next annual Synod meeting. The Lakeside Classis will resubmit its proposed By- Laws change recomendations, since presently there is no standing Synod Committee on By-Laws. (See 1990 Minutes, pp. 66+67) New officers were also elected to the Lakeside Classis. These are: Rev. Louis Medgyesi — Dean, Rev. Raymond Kaiser — Secretary/Treasurer, and Mr. Edward Bihary — Classis Presbyter. The Spring meeting of the Lakeside Classis will be held in early March of 1991, in Fairport Harbor, Ohio. Date to be announced. Unfortunately till this day no news of the Fall Meetings of the other three Classees of our Synod were received. (Eastern, Western & Central) More unfortunately Central Classis till today has not acted on election of Classis officers. * Rev. The thirtieth Anniversary Meeting of the Magyar Kongresszus was held on November 22-25 in the Sheraton Cleveland City Center Hotel. The three day long Celebration was the most festive occasion of the year for the World’s Magyars. Dr. István Tóth, Magyar Club president, gave a fine presentation on his recent visit to Hungary; Harasztyné Kapossy Kati was in charge of the Literary Evening on Friday; our Editor was in charge of the Protestant Divine Worship Service on Sunday morning. * Eightieth Anniversary of the Fairport Harbor (OH) Church was held on November 4. Bishop Zoltán Szűcs preached the Hungarian Sermon and Rev. Áron Elek preached the English Sermon as one of the formerpastors. Rev. Lajos Medgyesi led the neighboring ministers into the Sanctuary. After the divine service a warm reception was given with plenty of Hungarian food by the ladies of the congregation. The historic former Fairport, Ashtabula, Conneaut church had 17 pastors in 80 years. Out of them 4 are still living. The present pastor started his ministry in Fairport in 1984. He is also dean of the Lakeside Classis and treasurer of Calvin Synod. * Pastoral Election was held in the Cleveland West Side Church on Nov. 11. Rev. Reverends László & Éva Lukácsi are interim ministers until the newly elected pastor will move into Cleveland to assume his pastorate in the church, where our Synod was organized in 1939 and where the first Service was held on October 12, 1890.
