BUDAPEST ILLUSTRATED HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL REVIEW PUBLISHED BY THE CITY OF BUDAPEST MEDIEVAL ALTAR STATUES IN BUDAPEST Though the Turkish occupation and the vicissitudes of the recapture devastated Budapest's medieval churches and to a yet higher degree, in many cases without leaving a trace, their main adornments the coloured side-altars carved in wood, it has nevertheless been possible to assemble both in museums and private collections a fairly rich selection of historic Hungarian and foreign carved altar statues reflecting the evolution in an equable manner. The essay shows photographs of some of the chief works to be found in the Museum of Fine Arts as well as of two hitherto unknown German statues. First in chronological sequence comes the first Virgin from the borough of Toporc which was created around 1360. The second is another Madonna from the same place and dates from 1420, it belongs to the group of so-called »beautiful Madonnas«. The third, a statue of St. John purchased in the village of Szlatvin, came into existence immediately after 1500. The fourth is a group from the church of Kisszeben representing the Angelic Salutation, dated around 1520. All these statues are in the Museum of Fine Arts. Two privately owned works of art, the Unconsciousness of Maria and a Pietä group were unknown up to now. Both are German works from the early sixteenth century. The author mentions moreover an Austrian Madonna statue from the beginning of the fifteenth century which stands in the refectory of a Budapest nunnery and was brought to this country in the course of the eighteenth century. . , J Anthony Kampis BUDAPEST AT THE DAWN OF HISTORY The history of the Hungarian capital may be traced back for more than 2,000 years; ever since that time it has been a regular township. However, already well before that time it was an inhabited area and from the younger stone-age (neolithic era) onward all ancient civilisations of the Carpathian Basin evolved on its territory. In the fourth phase of the bronze period it was populated by the Thracians who were supplanted by the Illyrians, the propagators of the budding civilisation of the iron age, towards the turn of the first millennium before Christ. They were in turn superseded by Celts coming from the west. The Eraviscians, a cross-breed of Celts and Illyrians, founded the first urban settlement of a civilised character on Mount Gellért. In the first century befcre Christ, the Eraviscians were conquered by the Romans. Aquincum located on the present-day territory of the town was designated as the capital of the Roman province of Pannónia. In the storms of the migration of peoples that lasted for several centuries Huns, Goths, Longobards, Avars and Slavs fluctuated across the province and the territory of the town. Of these nations, the remnants of the Avars are most numerous, particularly as regards objects found in tombs. G.
