BUDAPEST ILLUSTRATED HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL REVIEW PUBLISHED BY THE CITY OF BUDAPEST THE FLOOD IN PEST Eight years ago, on the oceassion of the one hundredth anniversary of the great fJood that swept through the Hungarian capital, the Municipality published a Memorial Album edited by K. Némethy and S. Zakariás. The author of this article wrote an essay devoted to the literature of the period and to living conditions in those days. He made use of the bibliography devoted to the flood in his study. Recently, previously unknown notes recording the events of the period were found. Nothing is known of the identity of the person by whom these record of the flood and attendant events was written. All we learn, and that from the entries, is that the author was a witness and victim of the terrible flood of the past century. q j<0in a i THE Г N PUBLISHED WORKS OF JOSEPH ATTILA This issue of the »Budapest« contains eight previously unpublished poems by the young genius of Hungarian literature whose untimely death occtirred when he was only thirty-two years of age in 1937. These poems may certainly be ranked amongst the finest from his pen. The fact that Joseph Attila died when he was still so young probably explains why it is that so many of his works, like those this in issue, are scattered all over the country and have so far not appeared in rpi£tlUH -Oil r pcdntuiqs IIOI I MWX FERENC BUDAPEST, IV., OERLÓCZY. Many of the poems written by Joseph Attila at the beginning of his career are in the hands of a private collector who lives at Ungvár ; his French poems form part of the legacy of the late Professor E. Galamb. The brilliance of and the beauty of Joseph Attila's style were given widespread recognition only when the country was finally rid of the Nazis and when there dawned the new age in which he had so sincerely believed. Among the eight poems published in this issue, Nos I—VI. are in the possession of G. Márer, an intimate friend of the late poet ; No. VII. in that of C. Eperjessy, Joseph Attila's teacher ; and No. VIII. in the possession of A. Kozocsa, Chief Librarian of the Széchenyi Library in the National Museum. It is clear that Joseph Attila was the greatest Hungarian poet and. indeed, classicist in the period immediately after the first World War. Preparations have been made to publish an anthology of his works. This promises to be particularly interesting as it will contain the corrections and alterations made by the poet to his verses and so offer us an insight into the most secret and hidden recesses of his soul. c C L -L -S. Scheibrr ROOT MODERN SMALT, APPARTMENTS The root of the shortage of housing must be sought in growth of industrial development which lead the provincial population to flock to the capital lured to the industrial centers by the prospect of better living conditions. As time passed, it became necessary for the authorities to intervene more and more in the question of supplying the working masses with housing facilities. The conception of what we now know as a small appartment grew by degrees, although the appartments of that period did little more than satisfy the bare demands of a working man's family. Following the close of the first world war, this type of flat was designed underwent a radical change and the type that evolved was far more in keeping with demands of modern comfort and hygene. The tremendous housing shortage due to conditions existing during the second world war were responsible for the evolution of what is called the »prefabricated house«. Following my recent journey to England and inspection of latest developments there, instructions were given to the respective departments to prepare the plans of several types of prefabricated houses which are destined to play a prominent role in combatting the existing housing shortage in Hungary. ./. Шандора). Часть книги касающаяся литературы того времени и современных обитателей Пешта-Буды была написана автором настоящих строк. Для изучения этой эпохи он воспользовался данными литературных мемуаров затрагивающих наводнение. Тогда он еще не знал о существовании чрезвычайно интересного дневника о наводнении. Этот дневник в манускрипте, находящийся в частных руках, был до сих пор неизвестен научной литературе. Личность автора дневника покрыта мраком неизвестности. Все что мы узнаем о нем из его записей — это то, что он был очевидцем и жертвой ужасов наводнения. Толнай Габор НЕИЗДАННЫЕ СТИХИ ЙОЖЕФА АТТИЛА Мы печатаем здесь восемь неизданных стихотворенний рано покончившего самоубийством венгерского поэта Йожефа Аттила(1905—1937).
