126 BETHLEN NAPTÁR The second major event was the celebration of the 75th Anniversary. Three weeks during the month of October were given over to the celebration. On October 3, World-Wide Communion Sunday, the church celebrated around the Lord’s Table under the theme of “The Joy of the Present.” On October 10, the theme was “The Glory of the Past” and in Hungarian and English, under the leadership of Maria Feher and Joseph Yuhasz, the church reminisced about its glorious past. The Diamond Anniversary was celebrated on October 17 with the Rt. Rev. John Butosi, Bishop preaching on the theme “The Lord Goes Before You.” Members of the Western Classis participated. The Chancel Choir provided special music with a brass ensemble. After the beautiful service of worship, the congregation took part in a dinner-dance at St. Michael’s Hall, Hammond. As part of the 75th Anniversary celebration, the committee on Communication & Information, prepared a family pictorial directory. This directory provides a color portrait of all the families of the church. The committee also prepared and elaborate book which included the history of the church and many old pictures. As part of the celebration, hundreds of pictures depicting the history of the church were on display. Through the Mission & Outreach Committee, the congregation supported the One Great Hour of Sharing and the heart-lung machine in Budapest, Hungary. We reached out into the community with Thanksgiving Baskets, Blood Drives, clothing for the Veteran’s Home and the Crisis Center. On Father’s Day, the committee sponsored a Cake-Auction. The cakes were made by the men of the church and proceeds went to the “Meals on Wheels” program in the Calumet area. At Christmastime, the committee visited all of the sick and shut-ins of the church presenting them with a small live Christmas tree. The Christian Education Committee continued its good work in its ministry to children, youth and adults. Under its leadership the Sunday Church School provides each Sunday, classes for nursery through eight grade using David C. Cook material. On Pentecost Sunday, ten young people were confirmed and received into the membership. These young people meet each Sunday morning for 35 weeks. The curriculum used was Confirming Our Faith, published by the United Church of Christ. Five young people attended Synod Camp and upon their return, organized a Youth Fellowship, the first in a few years. During the year, Dr. Capp led Adult Bible Study. One of the interesting studies was the use of The Covenant, a study guide between the Disciples of Christ and the United Church of Christ. The study is being carried on through the two denominations with the possibility of leading to union. The Building & Grounds Committee — through the efforts of 10-14 men who faithfully come each week, the church buildings and grounds are voluntarily maintained. In preparation for the 75th Anniversary, under the leadership of the committee, the sanctuary and all other buildings were painted and cleaned by the people of the church. Total volunteer hours were 3,739. At the minimum wage of $3.45 per hour, without this volunteer help, the cost to the church would have been $12,898.00.
