BETHLEN NAPTÁR 215 LÁSZLÓ ESZENYI, our newly-elected Auditor, is a native of Hungary, having been born in Temesvár on March 4, 1912. He is of old Calvinist stock. “Laci”, as he is intimately known to his friends, received his education at the Balassa Bálint Gymnasium in Balassagyarmat and the Bocskai István Military school in Budapest. Between the years 1930 and 1934 he attended the Ludovika Academy, the “West Point” of Hungary, from where he was graduated at the head of his class and was also the winner of the highest scholastic award, the “Széchényi Prize”. He saw active military service for four years, then was assigned to the War College for Staff Officers, emerging first in rank as captain of the General Staff in 1943. He participated in the 1942 summer campaign against the Russians on the Don Front and was decorated with the “Signum Laudis”. In 1945, upon the termination of the war, he went to Germany where he spent almost all of 1945 in a military hospital in Passau. During the years 1945- 1947 he was leader of two of the largest refugee camps in Bavaria: Pocking and Plattling. In 1947 and 1948 he served the United Sates in a confidential capacity. Mr. Eszenyi arrived to this country on August 23, 1949, and a week later was employed by the American Hungarian Federation, where in seven months he helped to expedite the applications for entry into the United States of 5,000 Hungarian refugees. Since February 1950 he has been an employee of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. He has been attending classes at Southeastern University, Washington, D.C., where he is a senior student majoring in commercial sciences. Mr. Eszenyi is a naturalized American citizen. He lives in Silver Springs, Md., with his wife Eva (Kesseő), son Stephen, age 14, and daughter Susan, age 1.
