6 oldal BÉRMUNKÁS 1939 január 21. Junior Column "THE WORLD IS A STAGE" By MARY VARGA Shakespeare said, “All the world is a stage." And how right he was! Of course it’s a stage and we are the actors. Some of us are villians, others heroes and still others heroines. The stage is set! The villian is faring well. The poor miserable heroine is in suspense, in a dire predicament. Suddenly our hero dashes in and saves the day. The curtain falls on a happy ending Such is the jest of the plays we usually see. Look about you. Doesn’t the world remind you of a stage? For some it’s a fairy land set to magic by magnificient leisure and beauty. For whom? Well whom do you think? Whom do you see living in leisure? Only those who profit from the misery of others. For others, who must daily battle for a living, the props on the world-stage are misery and hunger. Yet, dear readers, both stages are built by the working class. The workers have set the stage many times, but no matter where or when, it has always been the same. Let us visulize a modern scene—a sad one: The workers, those who build everything in this world, are cast in the roles of the underdogs. The capitalists, those who live because the workers are content to slave for starvation wages, loll in luxury and, as the curtain drops, force the creators of the world’s wealth again into submission. Wherever this scenes is enacted it winds up the same way. If only these workers—the true heroes—would be more alert and make the capitalist villians wince! But it seems that these workers are too accostumed to taking the same submissive parts they have in the past. Of course there are a few workers who have begun to realize workers are the only useful people in the world and have begun to fight for a new classless society but their numbers are small and the fog of ignorance surrounding the other - workers seems hard to penetrate. Until the workers realize there is a class struggle and the abolishment of capitalism is necessary to insure true and lasting happiness, the capitalist villians will continue to browbeat the workers. But when the day comes when the workers realize their true position in society the stage will change. Of course it will not change so that the workers will browbeat the capitalists by having them do all the dirty work as the workers have done in the past. The workers aren’t interested in personal revenge. They are building a happier system. The workers will set up a stage where all will be equal and where there will be no class distinction. You might say to yourself that this story has no action but remember our stage is not an artificial one. The capitalists will not relinquish their parts in the present play. They are satisfied. They gloat in the spotlight leaving us workers in the background. But remember. Without the support of the supporting cast (the workers) they would fade out soon. Why should we do all the dirty work and take the “rap” and help them gain success and wealth ? As long as they can continue to do this they will stay in the limelight. If the capitalists would be presented with an ultimate to relinquish their parts what would they do? Would they fight themselves? No. They would call out military troops and send them out to kill their brothers in the name of “loyalty and duty." If these troops should refuse to fight for the capitalists they, the capitalists, would be without a defensive weapon. The ignorance of the working class, the fact that one half of the working class can be used to defeat the other half, is the capitalists strongest weapon. Perhaps if we study the situation more closely we will discover that the workers have the power to make a change. In such an event the conclusion to the play might be written as follows: “Then the curtain shall fall again to a new dawn, with a brighter sun shining, its rays falling upon everyone. When this peaceful sun sets and we see it sinking into the everlasting horizon we can close our eyes in peace and wait for the next dawn, and thus live as one big happy family ever after." Forgotten Men Have you forgotten those gallant men, Who for you and I have suffered? Do you realize they’re kept in a pen, And with the black earth covered? They did it alone for us to strive, And the tyrants overrun. But now you can see—they’re hurried alive, Perhaps for years to come. Now is the time to gain them back, And open their bars of hell. Let us show these tyrants the strength they lack, And let the workers their hardship tell. Arise, ye workers of the world. Think of those chained again, Remember when the red flag will be unfurled, There won’t be any forgotten men. By Mary Varga. Karcolatok Karcolja (f) A magyar egyletekből egy 100 tagú bizottságot szerveznek és Washingtonba menesztik őket, tiltakozni a nazismus és a magyarországi hasonló zsidóüldözések ellen. Szomorú dolog emberek üldözése vallási vagy faji eredetük miatt, de mégszo- morubb dolog a munkásharcosok üldözése, akik az. egyenlő társadalmi jogokért küzdenek. És aztán még annál is szomorúbb, hogy azok a polgári egyletek, melyek most' a 100 tagú küldöttségért siránkoznak, haK lani sem akartak a Horthy fehér terror idején megkínzott és elpusztult munkáshacosok védelméről. így van ez! Ha az embereknek a saját tyúkszemükre taposnak megvan a nagy fel- jajdulás, de a tudományos felismerésről hallani sem akarnak. Három évi hivatalos vizsgálat amit 203 városban folytattak le, megállapította, hogy a lakóházaknak csak 40 százaléka van olyan állapotban, hogy azt mondhatnánk, hogy azok az egészségügyi követelményeknek megfelelnek. 60 százaléka a lakóházaknak ezeken a helyeken olyan állapotban vannak, hagy vagy átalakítani, vagy újjáépíteni kellene. A munka- nélküliek egyik nagy csoportjának itt volna az alkalom azonnal hozzá fogni az építő munkához és visszadobni a segély morzsákat a profit rendszer apostolainak. A munkanélküliség megoldása a munka, amire oly nagy szükség van a hivatalos statisztika szerint is. És mégis nemzeti hősöknek teszik meg azokat, akik segélyeket osztogatnak. Chamberlain a “Béke Angyal” tovább száldogál Európa fölött és a béke érdekében tovább osztogatja mások országait. Mert ugye mégis csak nagylelkűség volt tőle Csehszlovákiát odaadni Hitlernek, utóvégre Csehszlovákia nem volt az angol imperialisták tulajdona. És aztán miért ne adná Mussoliniéknak a francia afrikai gyarmatokat, miért ne! Ha Hitler a new yorki Central Parkot követelnék tőle, miért ne ígérhetné azt oda nekik. A béke érdekében mindent lehet, csak egyet nem, az angol uralkodók békésen berendezett rab- lási érdekeit megsérteni. Majd amikor a többi rablók az angol rablók területére fognak kacsingatni, látni fogjuk a mostani béke angyalt, veszett kutya formájában bemutatkozni. A budapesti Népszavát, a Szociáldemokrata Párt, nagyon is lagymatag hangú szószólóját, egy egész hónapra betiltották, egyetlen cikk miatt, melyben az Imrédy kormány intézkedéseit kritizálta. Az bizonyos, hogy a modern történelemben, mint legnagyobb bűnt kell feljegyeznünk a sajtószabadság lábbal tiprását, mert a sajtó nyaktiló egyértelmű azzal a nyaktilóval, mellyel emberfejeket nyakainak le. Sajnos, hogy az amerikai magyar társadalomban, éppen a Munkás Bs. Szövetségnek és éppen ennek szociáldemokrata hivatalnokai azok, akik még eddig soha nem ismert és az egyleti életben különösen gyalázatos sajtó nyakti- lót állítottak föl, és mint a sajtószabadság legkegyetlenebb hóhérai kezelik azt. Imrédy ur, a szociáldemokraták lenyakalá- sához kérje kölcsön a Munkás Bs. Szövetség east pittsburghi nyaktilóját! A legújabb szovjet munkatörvény egyes részleteit a múlt héten hozták nyilvánosságra. Ebből megtudtuk többek közt azt is, ha egy szovjet oroszországi munkás több mint 20, mondd húsz percet elkésik a munkából, azonnal elbocsájtan- dó. Ha a munkavezető (magyarul hajcsár)) ennek a törvénynek nem tesz eleget, három évi súlyos börtönre ítélhető. Most csak az a kérdés, hogy a párthivatalnokokra is vonatkozik-e, a “munkáshaza” uj törvénye?! Vagy ők csak mint törvényhozó urak, a new yorki pártvezérekhez hasonlóan, csakúgy az ebéd óra felé sétálnak be ásitozva a hivatalba?! Még néhány ilyen törvény és nem háromezer, de hatezer marcona katonának kell vigyázni Stalin elvtárs életére. TÁRSAS VACSORA LESZ A KIZÁRT IWW TAGOK VÉDELMÉRE NEW YORKBAN. Az IWW new yorki csoportja január 21-én szombaton este 8-kor TÁNCCAL EGYBEKÖTÖTT TÁRSAS VACSORÁT rendez a Bérmunkás Otthonban, 1351 Third Ave. Ezen mulatság minden jövedelme a kizárt IWW tagok védelmi alapjára lesz fordítva. E helyen nem kell külön hangsúlyoznunk, hogy mennyire fontos osztály kötelesség a sérelmezett munkástársaink védelmét anyagiakban is támogatni. Az osztály szolidaritás legszebb jelét szolgáltatták a new yorki munkástársnőink, akik a konyhai kiadások költségeit magukra vállalták. Ig$- tehát bizonyos, hogy a főzés művészetében ismét kitesznek magukért munkás-társnőink és az ízletesen elkészített ételekről heteken át beszélni fognak. Jan. 21-én ne főzzön odahaza senki és az egész családok vonuljanak föl a Bérmunkás Otthonba munkástársaink védelmére. A belépő jegy ára 35c., mely a pénztárnál fizetendő.
