To analyze the mind is a very difficult task. The saying, “Millions of people have no mind of their own,” is one in which there is a good deal of truth. They possess a mind, and yet they do not “down” it. When we see misery and suffering among millions of the workers, and then look at their actions in response to those conditions, we fully realize that their outlook on life is not of their own creation. Their view is a result of the past influence of bourgeois ideas and training. These workers do not think in terms of working-class interest, because they think in terms of individualism. “I will get to the top yet” — that is their plea while wallowing in the trough of degradation, of want and of poverty. Just take a look as some of the actions of masses of workers. Let us take an example of such a worker — here is the first one. In this category the workers are helpless and utterly hopeless, and the only relief they will ever get is when they become mummified with the poison they have imbibed. By this example I mean the “soak,” who has no brains to stop guzzling the booze handed out. The other night I saw three persons picked up in an alley and placed in a police patrol. Two of them were men, the third person being a girl of about 20 years of age. They were taken into the police car. to be carted away as. so many cattle. On Sunday morning, after the “liquid battle,” three were lying in different places along the street. A monument of stupidity! people lying in such a condition being viewed by the passers-by. They were without any semblance of consciousness, even if they did wake up. What an example to children passing by. Then we have the dope fiends, the race horse fiends, the “chis.elers,” the “buncoes,” and many more from different strata of bourgeois society. Individualism predominates their activities. To mass workers, who are already so low down as herein stated, into an organization without using discipline and education is well nigh a hopeless task. We can, to a large extent, circumvent such a stupendous task by seeking the cause close to the source. By that we mean: we will commence with youth in furthering organization of the working class. Yet we cannot have such a well-developed organization, possessing a cultured membership and exerting power, in the course of a short time. Rather is it a task involving a period of many years. Can any example be as detrimental on a young mind than to see an older person, who is supose to have brains and thinking ability, go stumbling around under the influence of liquor at some affair arranged by the workers themselves. I will probably be criticized for expressing this thought, because it interferes with the “personal freedom” of those who indulge in the aforementioned practices. But if they could only realize that we do not think in terms of individualism, but in the sense that all individual thought must be subordinated to the will and interests of the mass as a whole. The bourgeois viewpoint is one of individualism. There would, of course, be no movement at all if everybody thought that they had the right to dissipate to extremes at any place and at any time, regardless of the circumstance es. How could there be any movement of any kind, for the simple fact would be that paralysis would have overtaken each and every one. However, this writer takes the viewpoint that the young, not knowing any better, shoulc be excused, but for the older ones there is no excuse whatsoever. And my advice to the young therefore is, to stay clear; do not be “smart” and allow your body to be “pus out of commission by such means. You are now in school. Why do you go there? To prepare yourselves, your mind, to be of some service to vour fellow- men. To observe, to reason, to analyze, and to act accordingly. You cannot function thusly i:: you are addicted to the habitual use of liquor. If a gasoline engine was clogged up in any way, shape or manner, it would not operate. How can a human engine, therefore, operate in such a condition, How can a human brain function when large quantities of alcohol are poured into the bodily organs ? Your brain, to function properly and efficiently, must have pure blood to purify it, and to keep it in working order. So do not contaminate that blood with something which is altogether foreign to the human body, especially when imbibed in large quantifies. Take care of yourself, because you only live once. Study and make the best of that life wich you have. Be consistent in your studying. Do not think because you are cheating your instructor that you are gaining something thereby, for the truth is that you are, in reality, cheating yourself. Co-operation is necesarry in everything. To be able to absorb ideas and to construct new ones on the basis of experience gained by entertaining ideas demands a careful study. Mi a Szövetséget munkás intézménynek tartjuk és annak Mint az ország más részeiben, úgy itt Los Angelesben is megunták a rabszolgák a kapitalisták bérrabszolga jármát huzni, mely már véresre törte a dolgozók nyakát. A Waber Show-Case dolgozói rúgtak ki az istrángból. Kezdik felismerni emberi voltukat, mivel látják, hogy a gyár vezetősége részéről csak üres Ígéret marad a munkások kívánsága. így ők is a sztrájk, az egyedüli hatásos fegyverhez nyúltak hosszú ide-oda ránga- tás után, amelyben az uniontcl volt részük. Most is alárendelték magukat a Brotherhood Carpenter and Jounter unionnak, ahonnan egy pár .ember intézkedik a dolgozók ügyében. Nem sok jót várnak a tapasztaltabb munkások ezektől a vezérektől, akik még minden esetben eladták a munkásokat és a harcos megmozdulásokat a saját részükre használták ki. Dacára annak, hogy az uniónak sok száz munkanélküli tagja van, a követelésben nem látjuk a rövidebb munkaidőért való sikraszállást, pedig ma semmi sem szolgálná úgy a munkanélküliek, mint a dolgozók érdekét jobban, mint az a törekvés, hogy minél kevesebnew ideas — do not have one idea push out another one in order to make “room” for it. Generate new ideas, which will make your outlook upon life vastly greater than before. Success will come to those who study and think — and act accordingly. To help your fellow workers, that is a worthy object. To achieve it means solid organization- — that is the nlan. Your services are not measured in terms of wealth, but in what you accomplish. Then, and only then, are you assured of success in the uplifting of our class from its present position. vagyonára is úgy kell vigyázni, mint a verejtékkel összehozott centekre. Úgy a levélküldőknek, mint a Szövetség minden tagjának azt üzenjük, hogy a májusban megkezdett tisztítás csak az első lépése volt a tagságnak az újjá szervezésre. Sem megállni, sem meghátrálni nem szabad, de tovább kell menniök azzal, hogy az Intéző-Bizottság TAGSZERZÉSI AKCIÓJA mellé állnak és a kitűzött rövid négy hónap alatt megkétszerezik a tagokTetszámát. Minden osztály, minden egyes tag legyen most szervezője, építője a Szövetségnek! ben legyenek a gyár kapuján kívül, akik arra ösztönzik a gyár vezetőségét, hogy a dolgozókat emberszámba se vegyék. Ez a körülmény nem fontos az unió vezéreinek, igy csak az órabéreket akarják felemeltetni a jelenlegi 60 és 65 centről 75 centre. Ez minden követelése az unionnak, de a gyárosok még ezt sem hallgatják meg, mert hiszen ők tisztán látják, hogy a munkásokat nem csak a véleményűk kifejezésére szervezik az utópia, a kommunista és a többi pártokba, de a gazdasági érdekük hatásos fellépése gátlására is igy széjjel szervezi az AFofL, amelyhez ezek a munkások tartoznak. Még egy másik körülmény, is hozzájárul hogy a munkaadók nem mutatnak semmi hajlandóságot az egyezkedésre és pedig, hogy a munkások sokáig beszéltek a sztrájkról és alkalmat adtak arra, hogy minden talpalatnyi helyet megtöltsenek előr.e készített árukkal. Azt a csalétket állította a gyár a munkások elé, hogy az üzem vezetőket szélnek eresztette és újakat állított a helyükre, akik még ékesebbek az előbbieknél és igy még jobban fogják a munkások terhére a munkaadókat szolgálni.
