____________________________________________________________________________Summaries István Sarlós CULTURAL ACTIVITY OF THE AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATIONS OF BAJA BETWEEN THE TWO WORLD WARS In the life of human society besides the importance of intellectual culture material, the role of culture has always been demonstrated in the background. Between the two world wars material culture of Hungary changed a lot. The economical circumstances between the two world wars and the Trianon Peace Treaty significantly retarded the development of the continuously growing Hungarian agriculture. Instead of country­wide initiatives there were only minor local economical associations to support the agriculture. Societies for breeding the new species of animals and growing plants, using technical equipments and procedures were established after 1925 but they flourished only in the 1930s. From these kinds of societies in Bács-Bodrog County, the biggest one was the Town Economical Association of Baja and its two predecessor organisations: Bács-Bodrog County’s Association of Rabbit Farmers and Pigeon- and Poultry Breeders and the Association of Baja Town’s Vineyardists. Besides the cultural and educational activity of these societies in Baja and in its surroundings they had excellent connections all over the country. In spite of their financial problems and the internal personal conflicts that made these associations’ life more difficult, however, their exhibitions and fairs increased on country-wide level. János Kemény HISTORY OF THE FERENC LISZT CLUB OF BAJA (1926-1949) The treatise shows versatile, high-quality musical work of the Ferenc Liszt Club of Baja lasting for 24 years in 6 chapters. The association that was established 1 August 1926 had three aims at the beginning: 1) young people’s musical education, 2) organisation of high-quality concerts (and making the Hungarian musician’s compositions more popular), 3) organizing of the music education. The great amount of work related to leading the club and organizing events between 1926-1947 was done by Emil Karig, who the leader of the club, and between 1947-1949 by Ilona Recska. As teachers they have undying credits in establishing the music education of Baja not to mention the organisation of the operation of the Club. The association started publishing a monthly newspaper called Filharmónia on 15 November 1926. Until the end of World War II, the Club organised more than 140 concerts with the participation of world and country famous musicians. Besides the concerts between 1932-1943, literary, ballet, church, carnival performances were also organised by them. Moreover, the musical education was an important part of 423
