NORBERTA V. SÁGI THE FORMING AND FUNCTION OF SMALL-GARDEN ASSOCIATION OF KECSKEMÉT (1917-1931) The contemporary importance of small-gardens is indisputable. Tenants of the parcels were town-dwellers who lived under bad conditions and didn't have landed property. The managment of Small-Garden Association tried to get as many land from the city as could satisfy the arising demands. By this it provided help for 7001000 families who could not or just partly maintain their food requirements. The city had been fulfilling the Association's request as long as it could see the point of it, namely, until the Association had really helped the dwellers' living. But at the end of the 1920s, when wages were rising, owing to the conjuncture, and the livelihood became generally easier, there was no reason to support the organization any more. On the other hand we musn't ignore the fact that the preferential leasing of land had already run against the city's interest at this time. As in Germany where they wound up the „poorgardens" when land prices rose and rather supported the needy with money, Kecskemét also denounced the lease contracts of the association as land became more valuable. ERZSÉBET ERDÉLYI THE SPREADING OF POLITICAL MATTER IN THE STREET NAMES OF KECSKEMÉT The official naming of streets and the using of these names are outgrowths of important social phenomena, hence they're inseparable from the ideology of a certain period. The political reversing and changing of public life always can be seen on the street names of a settlement. In the analysed roughly 150 years, between 1850 and 2004, the collection of street names underwent more metamorphoses, and mostly there was the idelogy of a social group in the background of a transformation. The name of public domains, came into being by natural naming before 1850, was gradually pushed into the background as result of the more and more deliberate and agressive interventions, and the actual political interest was reflected in the street naming system. Street naming as a memorial started to come into fashion in the 1860s, therefor the name of public domains, coming from personal names, increased at turn of the XIX-XX century. It was still motivated for a short time: the city honoured the persons in this way who were related to the place. But later, serving the national politics, they were allowed to gave these names unmotivatedly. Maybe the suspicion that the really informative names with út (road) compound were also politicized is the result of all this. At turn of the millennium a new practice started in street naming, but it was done by surmounting the political interests and considering the structural standpoints. In street naming of the succeeding period the determinants have been the local environment, the character of the district and traditionalism. However, we have to be careful, because such sophisticated and struting street names like Tücsök
