Abstracts 331 MIKLÓS MELEGA „I am the city” - The Transgression of Gyula Éhen, a 19th Century Urban Politician of Szombathely Gyula Éhen the mayor of Szombathely at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries is well- known mainly because of his activity in the field of urban politics. The urban development and modernization projects executed and elaborated by him awakened nationwide attention. Furthermore Éhen’s publications and writings on city administration and urban politics are noteworthy as well. The energetic city leader had become legendary in Szombathely even in his life, and after his death a certain cult emerged around him which is still alive. Gyula Éhen’s career in public life was not lack of contradictions. His autonomous personality resulted conflicts many times and because of his irascible nature Éhen occasionally found himself at the centre of scandalous events. Despite that he was a lawyer, as a journalist and duelist fell out with justice too. Several disciplinary investigations were initiated on him as a result of his mayoral actions in which he often ignored the official order and the procedural rules. In Gyula Éhen’s exciting and controversial character the transgressing and norm-abiding behaviours mingled. The present article attempts to give a more realistic and human picture about the personalities of an influential public figure through collecting his transgressions. By the analysis of the reviewed situations the reader may look into the system of social standards, legal and moral norms of a Hungarian country town in the late 19th century, while the emergence of the norms, their influence on individuals and the limits of this power become perceptible as well.
