DATA TO THE SETTLING OF WORKERS IN BORSODNÁDASD, DIVISION OF LABOUR, WORKERS’ MIGRATION, 1864-1909 Pál Nemesik In his study the author undertook to analyse data in two journals of hiring workers in order to answer the questions of how workers’ community, division of labour were forming at the factory in Nádasd owned by the Rimamurány Company and how their migration was taking place between 1864 and 1909. Concerning settling he points to the north-east direction of labour shift through examining the provenance of 520 workers in journal 1 and shows the integration of workers coming from regions in Upper Hungary inhabited by national minorities and of those belonging to the local agrarian proletariat. Collating the data in journal 2,he examines the process of division of labour dividing the continuously differentiating branches of iron industry into 133 occupations. He points to the separation among branches, the formation of hierarchy among occupations; he explains the essence of extinct occupations, their original sphere. He classifies 949 workers according to their occupation. He approaches the problem of workers’ migration for the period between 1894 and 1909. He analyses the reasons for 431 workers’ quitting their job, what, on the one hand, can be explained by the behaviour of workers and by other facts, on the other (emigration, retirement, lack of work). In one and a half years 45,4% of the workers employed there was exchanged. When examining lay-offs he pays special attention to the initial stage of labour movement in the factories in Rima and on the strength of a lot of data unknown to us so far he proves workers’ strikes in Rima, their riots, social combinations between the years 1900 and 1909. His standpoint expressed in the study is reinforced by the results obtained through his researches of local history and workers’ way of life, the pertinent special literature used by the author. FROM THE HISTORY OF WATER SUPPLY AND PUBLIC SEWER IN MISKOLC, 1884-1944 Mrs Seres, Anna Szegőfi The study deals with the building and upkeep of watermains and public sewer as the most important branch of social establishments in a town. It goes into details as for the preparatory work begun in 1884, and while doing so, it analyses the special professional problems due to the situation of the town. It unfolds broils about marking out the reservoir with the different plans being criticized scientifically. It deals with all the projects and costs calculated during the preparatory work. It analyses the difficulties of construction and unfolds the political and economic background of the twenty years’ preparatory phase. In the second half of the study separate chapters are devoted to the laying of watermains and that of the sewerage. In both cases the study describes in detail the working drawings and process, professional problems emerging during the construction 320
