work and finally statistical and technical characteristics of the establishments having been made. A full chronicle of the events of the building period between 1904 and 1913 can be found in the two chapters. On the basis of orders regulating the operations of works, the author has also outlined the history of establishments of the town’s public works ensuring the operation and control of built-up establishments, the manager, István Pazár, whose part was prominent, being mentioned, too. An important date in the operation of watermains and sewerage was the year 1922 when, due to typhoid epidemic, the mistakes made during the construction and operation of watermains came to light. The study gives a detailed description of the experts’ reports examining sanitary problems of the town and it analyses their solutions from a technical point of view and finally it tells about the reconstruction of watermains. It ends with a professional criticism of the sewerage. IDEOLOGICAL AND POLITICAL ENDEAVOURS OPPOSING REVOLUTIONARY LABOUR MOVEMENT IN THE COUNTY BORSOD ROUND THE TURN OF THE CENTURY Alfréd Lehoczky The study analyses ideological tendencies and political endeavours opposing revolutionary labour movement. In the first part it deals with the political behaviour of the most significant firms in Borsod, first of all, that of Rimamurány and the treasury. It underlines Rima’s effort to make workers’ upper layer loyal to them join elective franchise. Their effort came true in the environs of Ózd. The managers of ironworks owned by the state had not gone beyond polemics and suggestions but this, again, refers to the upper layer of workers only. In the second chapter the study deals with the standpoint of authorities. It underlines the liberal policy towards workers in the town Miskolc and the main features of the more complicated policy towards workers of the District Chamber of Industry and Commerce. The behaviour of county authorities towards workers had always been conservative and brutal. In the third chapter the author deals with tip changes having taken place among bourgeois people and intellectuals at the beginning of the tens in connection with the working class and the idea of socialism. He underlines the activity of the Society of Social Science in Miskolc and deals in detail with Tibor Vadnay’s works and articles analysing socialism. The fourth chapter deals with Christian Socialistic endeavours in the county Borsod. First of all it draws attention to the Christian Socialistic organization in Ózd and its theoretician of national fame, Lajos Csepela’s works. In the study the author points to the fact that the Christian Socialistic organization having realized its main function (forcing back Socialistis organization) loses its attractiveness among workers since it was not able to set up a programme of its own for workers. 21 Levéltári Évkönyv IV 321
