SUMMARIES IN ENGLISH DEMOGRAPHY Zsófia T. PAPP: On the demo graphical data of the Descriptio of Ferenc Széchényi The first part of the study surveys a short period of the life of Ferenc Széchényi, when he was a royal commisar in five counties of South-Transdanubia. Then it describes the manuscript „Descriptio Physico-topographica Comitatus Baranyiensis" (1785-86, in four volumes) stored in the National Library (Fol. Lat. 289), that was discovered by István Taba, and has been used by many researchers. In 1996 the Baranya County Archives acquired a microfilm copy of these manuscripts. The first volume describes the disctrict of Baranyavár and Szentlőrinc, the second the district of Pécs (excluding the town Pécs), the third deals with the district of Siklós and the last with the Hegyhát district. The questionnaire compiled by Széchényi can also be found at the beginning of the second volume. The second part first deals with the numerical data of the conscription. The answers, especially the ones to the „De rusticis" questionnaire give important data about the number, social stratification, religion, wealth and education of the population of the county at the end of the 18th century. Administrators of county administration were asked to collect data and some of the figures have less source value; the most reliable ones are about the population of the districts. Some data, especially the number of inhabitants and houses can be well compared with the data of the first census, using the methods of Taba. After evaluating the figures he found that demographic calculations cannot be based upon these numbers. Other problems can be solved, e.g.: important figures of the manuscript can modify our view on the peasant families and the religious and minority figures. The paper ends with a table, summarising the figure of inhabitants and houses village by village (in comparison with the census of Joseph IL, and the data about minorities, religious division, and the relations of the church filiae. The villages appear according to the order of the 1785 district division. Miklós FÜZES: The demographic consequences of the expatriation of German minority in Baranya, 1946-1949 The population of Baranya county remained unchanged during the Second World War, but after the war the biggest ordeal of the multicultural population was the expatriation of Germans.
