work of the expatriation authorities and the numerical result of it, comparing with figures of neighbouring counties and the country as a whole. The documents of the administration for patriation and land division (1948) contain the number of expatriated and of those who stayed in Hungary from all villages. The conscription of the agricultural population after the expatriation contains the figures about the German minority, and it can be well compared with the data of the 1949 census. The number of people considered to be German was eight times as much in the county, nine times as much in the country, than of those admitting to have German as their first tongue. The author concludes that the figures of the 1949 official census are useless for estimating the number of German population. It shows that they did not want to admit their mother tongue and nationality. Klára T. MÉREY: The workers of the tobacco factory of Pécs (1912-1920) The author deals with the foundation of the tobacco factory of Pécs, one of the biggest factories in the town, and the conditions of life of its workers. The special methods used during processing needed trained workers, who came from different factories of Hungary. These people taught newcomers the methods. The factory employed women primarily, because the manual processing required reliable and cheap workpower. In spite of this, working in the factory was attractive for the workers, mainly due to the social benefits, it offered to them. Manifold applications were received for office attendant posts, and it led to protectionism. The few officers earned much more money than workers. A limited number of them were employed, and they were chosen on their qualifications, and their promotion depended on their work. The author shows that the factory took care of its workers, as a state owned firm, in an exemplary way. The present paper is a part of a longer work, another will report on the history of the factory from 1921, after the Serb occupation. MINOR ARTICLES Péter RAJCZÍ: Verification of the noble family of Nemes of Bogdása The Baranya County Archives stores a diploma of King Ulászló II. This document ratificates and confirms the exemption of feudal serf duties of the noble family Nemes of Bogdása, originally issued by the Pécs capitular office. After the Turkish rule, the new landowner, Ádám Szily after a debate that lasted for years went to court against the noble family, still living at Bogdása.
