However, we must keep in mind fact that the values gained here are applicable to the excavated population in a limited degree only, since the state of preservation of the skeletal material of the series is very bad. In the case of adults the quantitative representative value is 0.43» the qualitative representative value is 0.22 (ÉRY-KRALOVÁNSZKY-HEJVTESKÉRI 1963). The fragmentary character involves that the parameters contain the data of an average of 10 males (27 per cent) instead of the theoretically available 37, and those of an average of 15 females (29 per cent) instead of the theoretically available 52. Before evaluating the data of measurements, however, we must consider their deviation rate, since mean values only represent the population actually if their standard deviation is not high. For this purpose I have calculated the sigma ratio of the cranial measurements and the indices of the Pécs series as related to the mean sigmas of ALEK SEYEV-DEBET S , publishing the results in Tables 7 and 8. Calculations show that in the first place men show a lower variability than the average, nay in two cases (those of the frontal chord and the basi-alveolar length) the variability is significantly low to 1 per cent. Women present an essentially similar situation, with the only exception of the significantly large variability of the chin height, a character otherwise negligible. Thus the low standard deviations allow us to regard the means of the measurements and the indices as characteristic ones for the population. If we turn to the analysis of the data contained in Tables 5 and 6 now, we find that of the investigated 13 sagittal measurements of the male crania one belongs to the "long" category, nine to the "medium" and three to the "short" one. It deserves our attention that the three "short" measurements are found on the facial skeleton: basi-alveolar length, palatal length, mandibular length. Of the 15 transversal measurements ten belong to the "medium".
