Thursday, April 6. 1989. AMERIKAI MAGYAR SZO 11. ssmsiam m mums in mwm GÁBOR KOLTAY The open-air theatres in Budapest pull in an increasing number of Hungarians and many visitors from abroad - a sign of the increase in tourism. We aim to provide productions for a summer evening programme which would respect traditions and the harmony of courageous innovation. We believe that visitors from abroad are primarily interested in specifically Hungarian productions, which have important things to say in content and style, from this part of the world. We are a small nation, but rich if we think about our cultural treasures, even if we have to produce something of value under more difficult economic circumstances. Our programme offers, in addition to our own national culture, things which are valuable in European and universal cultures. One example. In the Margaret Island Open-Air-Theatre,which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, this year we are reviving the Aida, which was such an explosive success in 1987, with internationally recognized Hungarian stars, such as Ilona Tokody, Ferenc Begányi, and József Gregor. We are also putting on a new Hungarian rock opera, the "Burning Iron Crown" about György Dózsa, the 16th century Hungarian peasant leader. The new ballet in the Szeged repertoire recalls the 1789 Paris revolution and the student revolt in Paris in 1968. * The Budapest Autumn Art Week will differ from previous ones. For more than 20 years, we have opened on September 26, on the anniversary of Béla Bartók's death, and the series lasts until the end of October, The choice representing the various genres, concerts, and exhibitions - always helped to find a way between the best classic and contemporary works. For some years now, we have tried to concentrate on a special theme and gather the productions around it. In our view, we primarily have to concentrate on our own tastes and problems, in order to attract interest, in the spirit of openness and social reforms to the questions that are to be solved and rethought through the means of art. We planned the 1989 Budapest Art Weeks in this spirit. ...FOR THE BUILDING OF THE EUROTUNNEL After more than 200 years, the British and French governments have come to an agreement, and by 1993 the tunnel - which will speed traffic under the Channel between Britain and the European continent «-will be built. It will consist of two- lane-tunnels and a service tunnel; at present work is proceeding on the latter. As the tunnel, just like the Budapest Metro, is being built using cast iron and reinforced concrete elements, there was no difficulty for the three building engineers of the Hungarian Uvaterv to join the designing work of the tunnel.Csaba Petho, Erzsébet Strébely and József Vagács are carrying out static calculations for Mott, Hay and Anderson of London, concerning the construction of the tunnel. Their twelve months contract with the British firm will expire this spring, but it can be extended. In choosing the three Hungarian engineers, the reputation of the 40 year old Uvaterv Engineering and Consulting Company for Transport and Communication had a considerable role. The quality of the company's work has been recognized by the building of airports, metros, railways, bridges, tunnels, roads, tele-communica- tional and industrial facilities in Hungary and in forty other countries. Its staff designed the Budapest Metro, and the new Budapest Ferihegy Airport terminal. They Are Killing Children The violence on the West Bank has become so routine, that it is being relegated to the back pages of the daily newspapers. So the death of a 4 year old boy hardly gets mentioned. We think there is a connection between this kind of behavior and the mentality of the Prime Minister of Israel. Note the article from the Financial Times (3/16/ 89) which says that he advocated links with the Nazis in 1941. They proposed an alliance against the British for the purpose of setting up a Jewish state. Only a Shamir willing to deal with Nazis can be responsible for the killing of 4 year olds. 4-Year-Old Boy Killed In Clash in West Bank JERUSALEM, March 27. (N.Y.T.) A 4-year old Palestinian boy was shot to death in the West Bank today during a clash between demonstrators and the Israeli police, Arabs and the army said. Palestinians identified the boy as Amjad Nasser, from the village of Kufr Kad, near Jenin. Officials at Jenin hospital said the boy died from a gunshot wound in the chest. A military officer said the army was investigating the incident after "a policeman was forced to fire his gun during a stone throwing demonstration in Kufr Kar." Palestinians also reported that a freelance Palestinian journalist, indentified as Hassan Jibrit, 26 years old, was beaten and shot by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank today. The army said it was checking the report. Israeli Government split over contacts with PLO By Andrew Whitley in Jerusalem A widening rift in Israel over contacts with the Palestine Liberation Organisation is turning into open warfare within the 10-week old "national unity" government. In the latest encounter between prominent Israelis and PLO members, several left* wing parliamentarians are due to attend a conference in New York this weekend, in defiance of appeals not to go from Mr. Moshe Arens, the Foreign Minister. Mr. Arens, a close confidante of Mr. Yitzhak Shamir, the hardline Prime Mi- nister, will be in New York at the same time, at the start of an official visit to the US, and may fear embarrassment. In his talks with Bush Administration officials, the Foreign Minister has confirmed that he will urge the US to abandon its recently established dialogue with the PLO. He is also expected to reaffirm that the Shamir Government sees little room for manoeuvre outside the 1978 Camp David agreements. As Mr. Shamir and his colleagues on the right sharpen their attacks on bodies such as the grassroots Peace Now movement which they revile as traitors, the liberal Jerusalem Post retaliated yesterday by reminding its readers of the long-buried fact that, in his youth, the Prime Minister had advocated links with the Nazis. While the extermination of Jews in Nazi- controlled Europe was at its height, in 1941, the underground guerilla group known as Lehi or the Stern Gang wrote to Germany to propose an alliance against the British, aimed at setting up a Jewish state on a "national and totalitarian basis". At the time, Mr.Shamir was a senior member of the group. Public discussion of the Stern Gang's activities before and during the Second World War is almost unheard of in Israel. (Financial Times) To the Editor On April 14th at 10 AM at New York City Hall the City Council Housing Committee is having an open, public hearing on the anti-warehousing bill, intro 369. Landlords are holding empty apartments by the thousands with hope to sell as condominiums. This contributes to the housing shortage and the problems of homelessness. The bill addresses these problems. Anybody who can attend, should do so.
