Convertibility for Hungary $ For a long time, and more forcefully in recent months , the rumor has it that the Hungarian forint is soon to be convertible with hard currency. In his' frequent trips to Hungary, the writer has met informally with advocates of both viewpoints. On the one hand, to let the forint lose in exchange with the dollar and other hard currencies would boost | Hungarian trade and the economy, on the other hand, linking the forint with the dollar would be to entangle the country in continuous disasters. What j is the reality? Hooking the forint into hard currencies without restrictions means to buffet it against unpredictable and savage forces. High inflation in the capitalist countries, the wild fluctuations in the price of gold and of interest rates, the vast pressure of $ 600 billion in Eurodollar funds, the financial speculation pf the multinationals (from which they often profit more than from the production and sale of then- normal products), the dominance of West Germany in the European . money market and of the USA on a world scale; all these factors would toss the freely convertible forint as other European currencies are tossed. And the competitiveness of Hungarian exports may become a weak reed to lean on. Let us take Switzerland as an example. It superficially resembles Hungary. It, too, is small, has no significant raw materials, and depends largely on exports. But is has a highly developed technology, large gold reserves and is banker to the world. And the value of the Swiss franc rose from four to the dollar to less than two. Was that a blessing? Hardly. Imports became cheaper, because the Swiss franc was higher in value than other currencies. But for Switzerland, an exporting country, it became very difficult to export competitively, precisely because its currency forced prices up of its goods for sale in the international market. So putting its currency in line with other hard currencies did not benefit Switzerland. Let us take another country which also has certain resemblances to Hungary, Denmark. The Danish inflation rate is double-digit and rising. Its exports, in spite of the falling krone, are not holding their own. Although its workers are largely protected from accelerating inflation, as are Hungarian workers, its national debt and budget are going up ominously Are these blessings? Cautious and limited conversion of the forint may be advantageous for Hungarian foreign trade, which includes a 30 % block of trade with the Soviet Union. But there are major risks involved One is the need for a considerable increase in the competitive productivity of Hungarian 'abor, partially achievable by technological improvement and partially by an increase in “simple” work. Secondly Hungarian authorities must be able to stop private forints from seeping into the industrial pool for fc rint versus hard currency exchange. Levelek Lehet-e jobb? Nagyon hasznos, ha az olvasók közük a Magyar Szó szerkesztoségevel, mi nem tetszik nekik a lapban es mit szeretnének a lapban olvasni. Éppen olyan helyes, ha a lap munkatársai is közük nézeteiket. Nekik ez nehezebb, mivel ismerik a nehézségeket, amelyekkel ilyen kisterjedelmű és kispénzű lap küzd. Igyekszik a különböző kívánságoknak megfelelni, de nincs rá hely és gyakran pénz sem. A szer- kesztoseg tudja, mi a legfontosabb közlendő, de ha az olvasok sokfele kívánságát teljesítené, mindenről csak egesz röviden es felületesen lehetne a lapba Írni. Vagy pedig, hogy a kért témákat tárgyalhassák, más témákat ki kellene hagyni. Hiszen a lap 12 oldalából negyet lefoglalnak a személyi- es a sport-hirek, a praktikus tanácsadás es a társadalmi-mozgalmi közlemények. így a munkatárs-szakember csak szerényen-óvato- san szólhat minderről. En itt például azt mondom, hogy igyekeznünk kell könnyeden es érdekesen Írni, de nem tehetünk eleget ama olvasóknak, akik elsősorban szórakoztatást kivannak. Eszak-Ameriká- ban a számos magyarnyelvű lap közül ez a lap majdnem egyedül közli és magyarázza az ország és a világ fejleményeit, eseményeit, és problémáit haladó és békés szellemben. Akik itt csak magyarul olvasnak, sokkal tisztább es igazabb képet kapnak minderről, mint akik e lapot nem olvassák. De még, aki pld. a N.Y. Times-ot olvassa, Magyarországról sokat tanulhat a Magyar Szóból, amit a Times-ban nem találhat. Nem adok tanácsot a szerkesztőségnek, ők is tudjak mindezt. De talán meg inkább igyekezni kellene a világ minden fontosabb eseményéről legalább egy keveset Írni es a nehezebb kérdésekről a néhány külmunkatarstol már jóelöre cikket kérni, mivel ők nem tudhatják, nem ir-e mar más ezekről. Elvi szempontból azonban még meg kell jegyeznem valamit. A szocialista rezsimek, kormányok is természetesen sokban tevedtek, sok hibát, sót bűnt is követtek el. Mig a lap védi őket a rágalmak ellen, rá kell mutatni e bajokra is, hogy az olvasók kellő időben ismerjék és értsék azt a kort, amelyben élnek. De sokat nem mondhatok erről, mert nem hiszem, hogy én, vagy bárki más jobban elláthatná a szerkesztés súlyos feladatát. ______________________Peregrinus Boldog,hogy támogathatja a lapot NEW YORK, N.Y. Ezentűl, amig élek, nem fogom elmulasztani a segítséget. Ha mindig szükséges volt a magamfajta embernek a Magyar Szó olvasása, az uj adminisztráció következtében még inkább szükséges. Ószintén mondom nemcsak, hogy szeretem a lapot, de életem egyik nagy értékének tartom. Gyógyírként hat ram olvasása. Fogadalmat teszek, hogy a jelenlegi drágulási és inflációs helyzet ellenére, tőlem telhetöleg anyagi támogatásban fogom a lapot részesíteni. E sorok írásakor kaptam meg a Magyar Évkönyvet.
