We finally came to a night­club that had a band which played the Csárdás, but in rock-and-roll style. It was most dissappointing. Boil up some water with vinegar, oil, sugar and salt to taste. When it is on the boil throw in finely sliced white cabbage, bring to the boil again, remove with a strainer and place in the middle of a salad bowl. Repeat with a smaller quantity of red cab­bage and arrange it around the white. Dunk sliced peppers in the dressing, and arrange around the edge of the bowl. Finally, peel 5 or 6 tomatoes, slice them, add salt and pepper, and place them on top of the salad. CSOBÁNC CASTLE (cont. from. p. 8.) encouraged him as there was certainly no shortage of the juice of the grape. On the top of the steep ba­salt cone, the irregular quadrilateral of the castle enclosing a large courtyard was built by the Gyulafi branch of the Rátót family,in the 13th century. It never had any great strategic significance, though during the 150 years (16th to 17th centuries) of Turkish occupation , it played a certain part through the successful mounted patrols of its defenders. In the 16th century, its most renowned proprietor and defender was László Gyulaffy, a commander of castles known all over the country in his day. Accor­ding to tradition, he is the author of the little fare­well poem: “ Fine fish of Balaton, Good wine of Badacsony, Farewell to you, Csobánc!” The most gjorius chapter in the history of Cso­bánc is the period of the war of independence led by Rákóczi against the Hapsburgs. In 1707, 30 hey­ducks (poor foot-soldiers of the 18th century wars of independence) and the population taking refuge in the castle, among them girls and women, defen­ded the castle against the siege of the army of the imperial general Rabutin. The ruins of the castle were made safe in 1953, and a few years later, on the 250th anniversary of the celebrated siege, a me­morial tablet was installed in the eastern wall of the main tower. Not far from this spot, a few lilac shrubs flowe- . ring even today arouse further exciting memories: the garden of the castle must have bloomed and the scented flowers opened for the pleasure of the young Gyulaffy ladies here.
