10 REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA kor, még az első háború előtt, a Szentföldön töltött három hónapot, országos nevű jogászok társaságában dolgozik egy ügyön, amely a Tif- fini Egyezmény idején kezdődött és több mint harminc éve tart. Ez a nagy per az Északamerikai Orosz Orthodox Egyház viaskodása a St. Nicholas Cathedral dékánjával és a moszkvai patriarcha exarchájával, Boris Vik érsekkel, akinek itteni tevékenységét az amerikai kormány soha nem szándékozik elismerni és engedélyezni, mert a jelenlegi orosz polgári kormányzat, mely- lyel az egyház ott teljesen azonosítja magát, nem csupán vallás-ellenes, vagy csupán atheista, hanem a vallás és szabadság teljes eltörlésére s az egész világ Moszkva hatalma alá hajtására irányul. Ezeknek a periratoknak, száz-meg-száz oldalas beadványoknak az olvasása bárkit meggyőzhet az amerikai igazságszolgáltatás érint- hetetlensége felől — mert hát engednének-é Amerikának Moszkvában évtizedeket, hogy igazáért harcoljon? De meggyőzhet arról is, hogy ha valamit elmulasztunk idejében megtenni, később megadjuk az árat, és szinte jóvátehetetlen bajt okozunk magunknak. Gondoljuk csak arra, mi volna itt, ha nekünk Rákosikkal és Kádárokkal kellene viaskodnunk? — Dr. Schaeffer szövegezésében így kezdődik a Tif- fini Egyezmény: “Szem előtt tartva az érdekelt gyülekezetek tagjainak legfőbb javát és legmagasabb szellemi érdekeit, és hogy kikerüljünk a jövőben bármely jogi vagy egyházi bonyodalmakat, határoztuk el ezeknek a gyülekezeteknek befogadását . . .” Sapienti satis est. Aki a dolgot érti, annak nincs szüksége további magyarázatra. DR. SCHAEFFER KÁROLY tb. egyházkerületi elnökünk 90 éves születésnapi bankettjén mondott asztali áldás és üdvözlő beszéd Our gracious heavenly Father, it was still the Star of Thy Glory which led us here today to pay our respect to Thy faithful servant whom Thou hast already so distinctly honored. Ninety years and nine days ago Thou hast placed him into our midst under the rays of the same Star and ever since he was Thy never-failing messenger to convey to us the blessings Thou hast entrusted to him. At long last we have now this occasion to bring before Thee our gratitude for the example and teachings of his life, which followed so loyally the pattern set by Thy Son, our Lord. It is such a joyful and happy privilege that we can stand at this crystal window at the gate of Thy realm-, through which we can so clearly contemplate Thy glory and Thy goodness towards us and for which we can offer our thanks to Thee, our gracious Father! At the same time we ask Thy further blessings upon this good friend of ours and upon his beloved ones, and also upon this gathering today; bless our food, but bless our thoughts and grateful sentiments too, through Thy Spirit. We ask all this in the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. ★ ★ ★ Last November Dr. Sheldon E. Mackey wrote to me that today there will be a celebration honoring Dr. Charles E. Schaeffer, who is 90 years young now. Dr. Mackey also asked me “to make a five-minute address”... He thought that such an address from me would be particularly appropriate in the light of the close relationship which Dr. Schaeffer has always had with the Magyar churches. As a friend of Dr. Schaeffer for the past 36 years, and as President of the Magyar Synod, I feel greatly honored to have the privilege and pleasure of greeting Dr. Schaeffer on this momentous occasion in the name of the Magyar Synod. As far as I know, this is the first time that Dr. Schaeffer has been honored in such a unique way. Today, when we honor a man who is also the Honorary President of the Magyar Synod, all of the Hungarian congregations are rejoicing with us in spirit, because we feel that in your person, Dr. Schaeffer, we have a man who was and is our ideal in every respect. Through our work together, we learned to know you as a Christian — “A Christian is the highest style of man” (Alexander Pope). We always felt closer to God when we were in your company. Your Christian life, and feeling toward us, was always inspiring and encouraging. We all felt that you had an honest heart! To us your Christian life was not an imitation, but a reproduction of the life of Christ! The Hungarians always respected you, Dr. Schaeffer, as a great man! “It is great to be great, but it is greater to be humble” (Will Rogers). “Some are born great and others achieve greatness.” You achieved greatness, Dr. Schaeffer, through your loyal and unselfish services. You served not yourself, but the Lord and your fellowmen. Yes, “whoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant.”
