Uh «Mal AMERIKAI MAGYAR REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA WHY IS RELIGION SO HARD? This is a question which is frequently suggested to the young man who is trying to hammer out a decent character, and to lead a life of faith upon the Son of GodJ Yet when we come to look at the matter squarely we find that religion is not so very much different from other things which are worth while. Perfection is not easily arrived at. The musician plays wonderfully and easily, yet that very ease is the result of seven or eight hours a day of steady practice. The bat of Babe Ruth sends the ball flying over the bleachers, and he does it so easily that we quite forget that only consistent are easily discouraged and turned aside. It may be that per- ability to gauge the ball and hit it so squarely. There are no easy jobs amongst the sons of men who are toiling for the upbuilding of the world. If any man desires to master any­thing, from the violin to the aeroplane, he must be willing to labor night and day. The great successes in business life are no accidents, but are won by the toilers while others are resting or sleeping. And so it is with the higher life. There are many who seem to be going to heaven without any trouble, but they are not of very much account; the saints are, every last one of them, “pulling against the streambut they are not pulling any harder than the other men who are striving to make a success of things in other spheres. The student who sleeps at his books and who saunters through his college course may get an education, but it is not the same education which rewards the burner of the midnight oil. We get what we are willing to pay for. It is hard to cheat Nature. The farmer gets out what he puts in; so does the workman, the musician, the editor, the preacher, and the Christian. To get rid of your duties — disharge them. Wise men never explain their failures. KEEPING UP OUR COURAGE The world’s work will never be done by the people who are easily discourage and turned aside. It may be that per­sistence is never found in any orthodox list of the virtues, but it has some right to be there, nevertheless. Very many of the things that are best worth doing will not be done save by sticking at them day after day through months and years and even decades. Kingdoms are never built over night, and least of all the Kingdom of Heaven. It is true that the Kingdom of Heaven was at hand, but none knew that Jesus said, when He started out on His life ministry, better than He how slow and laborious and even discourag­ing would be the task of incorporating it into the lives of individual men and women and the society which they would build up through the years. As a great opportunity and possibility that Kingdom is at hand just as it was in His day, but the wisdom to see opportunities and possibilities and the courage to embrace and use them are not easy to find, save through patience aqd the trying road of experience. And if we haven’t the couage and the endurance and the fine stay­ing qualities necessary to walk that kind of a road, our ser­vice to the great undertaking will not be very great.
