TO GOD in the highest and on peace, good-will to men! Thus angelic choir sang through the midnight skies over the plains of Judea, more than nineteen centuries ago. Still we hear those voices re-echoed by the millions of men, women and children in all Christian lands. The song never dies because it expresses the deepest feelings of the human heart.

It is wonderful that the first note of the angels’ song was “Glory to God.” That must always be first. The glory of God is the chief end of man. All that man ever does, all his strivings and purposes in life must be directed to this supreme end. This is preeminently a Reformed Church doctrine. It is the heart of the teaching of John Calvin and underlies the whole system of the Heidelberg Catechism. In America where we have come under other influences we have lost some of this emphasis. We are emphasizing the welfare of man, and man’s self-realization, and God and His glory have been largely obscured. The Church must re-emphasize this old doctrine of God’s glory. The Church must tell its members once more that the very mission of the Church is to promote the glory of God.

The angels also sang of “Peace on earth, good-will to men.” Too long have nations lived in war with one another. Bloodshed marks the

tracks of human history. If men would live

for the glory of God they would be at peace with each other and would show good-will to all mankind.

The Christmas message this year should bring men and nations more closely together. There should be peace with God, peace with

our fellowmen and peace in our own hearts. The world is in a sad state these days because men everywhere have not heeded the angels’ message. Men have been selfish and greedy, and they have forgotten God. We must go back to the source of our being and the Fountain

of all blessing. May this Christmas season, during which we celebrate the birth of Christ, Who is the Prince of Peace, bring many blessings

to our Hungarian congregations, to all our members, and help to bind them all into a common bond of brotherhood in Christ.

A DIPLOMATA PRESBITER.

Meglehetősen fiatal amerikás pap voltam még. Az angol nyelvvel természetesen hadilábon álltam s valljuk be: most sem olyan nagy közöttünk az áldott békesség . . .

Az egyháztanácsban valami adóügy, vagy biztosítási ügy került szóba. Valami olyasféle, amit az ánglius hatalmasságokkal kellett elintézni, de aminek az elintézése nagyon döcögősen haladt előre. Hány- juk-vetjük a dolgot jobbra is, balra is, — amikor megszólal egyszer az egyik idősebb presbiter:

— Az ám a baj, tiszteletes uram, hogy mindenféle nyelven beszélünk mi, de azért mégis csak legjobban tudunk magyarul!

Nagyot kacagtam a diplomatikus megjegyzésen s lelkem minden igaz szeretetével ölelve körül az öreg magyart, mondtam neki:

— Igaza van, kedves bátyám, a mi fejünk bánja azt, ha Amerikában hadat viselünk az ángliussal!

Az ügyet elintéztük ugyan, de a tanulság megmaradt: Amerikában a pap sem (a magyar pap legke- vésbbé) boldogulhat igazán az angol nyelv nélkül.
