A the meeting of Pittsburgh and Eastern Synods last Oc tcber, it was announced that those congregations which constituted the Western Classis of this Hungarian Church would unite with the Pittsburgh Synod of our denomination, while the congregations composing the Eastern Classis would unite with the Eastern Synod. Not long afterward the papers contained the information that a considerable number of the congregations in the Eastern Classis had decided to enter into or- ganis union with the Protestant Episcolal Church, and this was announced as a great proof of the unifying influence of the Lambeth Conference, and in glowing rhetoric was pictured as one of the most remarkable movements since Reformation days. Inquiry developed the fact that a few pastors had signed an agreement with several bishops of the Episcopal Church, but we are told there was considerable question from the beginning as to the ability of these pastors to “deliver” their congregations and the properties owned by them. The officials of the National Church in Hungary, who have been in America trying to effect a proper settlement, appeared astonished at this development, and asserted that inasmuch as these people always belonged to the Reformed Church, they would never feel at home in, ar be satisfied to affiliate with, another denomination. We understand that the matter is still hanging fire, but that at this writing it does not appear probable that more than a very few will make the transition into the Episcopal Church. We are moved to mention the matter at this time because we have just been privileged to see a rather remarkable tract entitled, “Simple Answers to Some Common Questions about the Present Affiliation of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America with the Protestant Episcopal Church,” by “Dean” Louis Nanassy. This tract bears the imprimatur of the Department of Missions and Church Extension of the Episcopal Church in New York, and deserves to rank high among the current woiks of humor. The more or less distinguished author makes a serious effort to demonstrate that the Hungarian people in America belong logically in a Church which has an Episcopacy, and declares that the Reformed Church in this country does not closely enough resemble the Hungarian Reformed Church either in Church government, doctrine, ceremonies, history or traditions, to justify theirjoining our denomination. Protestáns egyházközi viszonylatunknak egyik különös példája áll előttünk a csatlakozott magyar ref. gyülekezetek által folytatott tárgyalásokban. Az Oct. ben tartott Pittsburg és Keleti egyházke- *rületi gyűléseken be lett je lentve, hogy a magyarországi ref. egyháznak csati, nyugati egyházmegyéje egyesülni fog a mi Ref. Churchtinkbeli Pittsburg Egyházkerületünkkel, a keleti magyar egyházmegye pedig a Ref. Church Keleti egyházkerületjével. Nem sokkal azután az újságok azt hozták hírül, hogy a keleti egyházmegyének tekintélyes számú gyülekezete elhatározta volna, hogy szerves összeköttetésbe lép a Prot. Episcopális egyházzal, és ez úgy lett feltüntetve, mint a Lambeth Conferenczia egyesitő törekvésének vívmánya, és magasztaló szónoklattá a refor- máczio kora óta történt legnagyobbszerti eseménynek megrajzolva. A vizsgálat kiderítette azt, hogy nehány lelkész aláirt egy egyezményt az episcopál egyháznak pár püspökével, — de úgy lettünk értesítve, hogy kezdettől fogva nagyon kétségesnek tűnik fel, ha vájjon ezen lelkészek képesek lesznek é a gyülekezeteket és az ezek által birtoklóit vagyont is átadni az Episcopál egyháznak? A magyarországi ref. egyháznak képviselői, a kik azért vannak itt Amerikában, hogy helyes elintézést létesítsenek, — csodálkozásuknak adtak a fejlemények felett kifejezést, és erősítették, hogy miután e gyülekezeteknek tagjai mindég a református egyházba tartoztak, — soha nem éreznék magukat jól, soha nem volnának megelégedve összekötettésben lenni egy idegen felekezettel. Úgy tudjuk, hogy az egész ügy még mindég függőben van, és hogy, e sorok írásakor, __ nem látszik valószínűnek, hogy több mint legfeljebb egy pár gyülekezet menjen át az Episcopál egyházba. Hogy az ügyet most szóvá tesszük, annak oka az, hogy kezünkbe került egy kis füzet, — melynek czime ez: — “Egyszerű feleletek néhány közönséges kérdésre, a mik az amerikai magyar református egyháznak a prot. püspöki egyházzal való kapcsolatára vonatkoznak.” Irta Nánássy Lajos esperes. Ez a füzet az Epis- ccpális egyház Missio és Vallásterjesztő hivatalának engedélyével készült és kimagasló példánya a mulattató irodalmi termékeknek. A többé kevésbé hírneves szerző komolyan erőlködik hogy kimutassa azt, hogy az amerikai magyar reformátusok tulajdonképen a püspöki egyházba tartoznak, és kijelenti, hogy az amerikai Reformed Church sem kormányzatban, sem hitelvekben sem szertartásokban sem történelemben, vagy hagyományokban nem hasonlít a magyarországi ref. egyházhoz, ennélfogva nem kell nekiek a mi felekezetűnkhöz csatlakozniok.
