There Is No Place Like Budapest But There Are Another Budapests... If you hear someone say Budapest, your first association (hopefully) is the capital of Hungary, a city located in Europe; but did you know there are other places named Budapest elsewhere in the world? Well, there are two more Budapests in the United States of America, and a Buda in Texas to boot. Come with us to visit the cities that share a name with the Hungarian capital. Budapest, Georgia, Unites States of America This Budapest is a small unincorporated com­munity of seven buildings in Haralson County. Yes, it is named after the Hungarian Budapest and it has close ties to its namesake, as the inhabitants named their community Budapest in honor of the capital of Hungary. Why? In 1882, real-estate developer Ralph L. Spencer of Essex, Connecticut, invited 200 Hungarian wine-making families, then employed in the mining industry in Pennsylvania, to settle on 2,000 acres (8.1 km2) of land at this site. Many accepted this offer and were led by a Catholic priest, Father Frances Janisek. Today, chiefly graves preserve the memory of the long-disappeared Hungarian community, but still you can visit this little piece of forgotten Hungarian culture by taking a drive down Budapest rd. Budapest, Missouri, United States of America About this little Budapest this is the all we know; A post office for a town called ‘Budapest’ was established in 1912, and remained in operation until 1922. The community most likely was named after Budapest, in Hungary, the native land of a share of the early settlers. Buda, Texas, United States of America The city of Buda, Texas, is by far the biggest community on this list. Buda is a city in Hays County with a population of 7,343 residents in 2010. Buda is part of the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos metropolitan statistical area and one of Austin’s fastest growing suburbs. There is a Hungarian saying, based on an old Hungarian tale, that “These was a dog-market in Buda only once”; this is meant to mean that a particular favourable opportunity was a one-time occasion only). Your book tells such a powerful story, so terrifying to your readers who imagine how they could have coped with the air raids and the imprisonment and the heavy responsibilities of your family that you bore when you were so young. And how all of this could be happening in Budapest, the “pearl of the Danube,” with its rich history and its civilized society - today it’s almost impossible for us well-fed Americans to imagine. That is why your book is so important. You are bearing witness to these awful events: you were there. It really did happen, to you and your family and all those around you. The old phrase, “out of the frying pan ... but into the fire, ” describes what happened to your country when the Germans ’ occupation was followed by the Soviet occupation. What misery and hardship! And yet, what appreciation of beauty and of family, and enjoyment of life. The details of your story are so compelling, whether it was trying to make paprikash from a dead horse, or entering the Elizabeth Arden salon in postwar Paris, or inviting friends to sit in your bathroom because that was the only available space for entertaining. The deportations, the damaged returnees from the con­centration camps, the Soviets seizing Hungarians’ personal property and businesses, and the understand­able view that America lived in isolation on its “big island” - all of these are so clear in your book. How horrifying it must have been to live through all this, and then the cannon fire of the ill-fated Hungarian Revolution - and finally your dramatic escape with your family. So many times during your narrative it must have seemed like this was “the end of the world. ” And yet, life went on, and Hungarians went on (though many of them started new lives elsewhere, as your family did). At so many points I asked myself what my family and I would have done in this situation, and was so grateful that I didn’t have to find out. The photographs of your family and relatives are beautiful. It really adds to the book to be able to “see” these people. You can be proud of your work, and of the great, details - the sights and sounds and smells, the conversa­tions, the feelings that really make your book alive. You have documented an important part of world history in amazing first-person detail.
