Director: Éva Szörényi. Eugene Casagrande, DDS on The Importance of Fluoridation Should the Los Angeles water supply be fluoridated? Eugene Casagrande, DDS, the newly in­stalled President of the Los An­geles Dental Society, definitely believes it should. He told me during a business dinner at the Csardas Restaurant that, con­trary to popular belief, An­gelenos do not enjoy the benefits of fluoride in their drinking water. Los Angeles is the only city in the U.S. with a population over 1 million that docs not provide this valuable benefit to its citizens. Although the issue did come up several times in City Council during the past 30 years, propositions, motions and ef­forts to optimally fluoridate L.A.’s water supply have consis­tently failed. An ordinance to raise fluoride level to 0.8 parts per million (from previous 0.2 - 0.6 ppm) was enacted in 1974 but not implemented. The proposi­tion to distribute free fluoride tablets to schoolchildren also met with opposition in 1974. In 1975, Proposition F was defeated in general election. Dr. Casagrande answers some of the most often asked questi­ons for our readers.- What is fluoride ?- It is nature’s cavity fighter. Fluoride is an abundant com­pound in the earth’s crust and is found in minerals that arc in rocks and soil everywhere.- Why does it have to he in so many different products (looth-Wc arc looking for co-workers experienced in TEXTILE manufacturing, possibly with Hungarian diploma. Children benefit from sys­temic applications of fluoride (from drinking liquids or eating foods containing fluoride) that incorporate fluoride into the enamel of developing teeth, making them more resistant to decay. After teeth develop, topi­cal applications of fluoride from toothpaste and mouth rinse help the tooth structure to further prevent decay by promoting rcmincralization of enamel.- Has fluoride and its effects on public health been adequately tes­ted?- Since its introduction 50 years ago, adding recommended levels of fluoride to community water supplies has been carefully studied and found to be the single most effective public health measure to prevent tooth decay and to improve oral health for a lifetime.- What would be the expense? Do the benefits outweigh the costs?- The average cost for a com­munity to fluoridate its water is 51 cents a year per person. Over a lifetime, that is less than the cost of having one cavity treated. Our Lord said, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." Most people do not believe it. The wise believe it and benefit by it. Who is the meek man? Well, he is not the man who tamely and feebly allows himself to be maltreated, to be a doormat. Moses was among the meekest of men but he braved the fury of the totalitarian in power, he ruled a cowardly mob, he led an ill-disciplined army of slaves to victory, and he founded a nation. Meekness is the nor­mal attitude of a brave man. It is always the result of severe self­­discipline. It was an outstanding characteristic of the one peerless life among men: Jesus, who him­self said, "...learn from me... I am meek and humble in heart..." Therefore, the meek man is not a weak man. He is a man, rather, who accepts God’s will for his or her life and who is courteous and considerate toward others, one who has that "gentleness which wedded to strength makes a man," as Tennyson put it; in other words, a gentle man, or as we would say, a gentleman in all relations of life. The man who accepts God’s will for his life and who is thoughtful, courteous, and considerate of his fellow man may not gain a lot of real estate, but he is the one who ul­timately will get the most out of life. He will, in Jesus’ phrase, "inherit the earth." And so it fol­lows that we shall have a gentle­ness and forbearance toward all men and a hatred toward the sin that manifests itself in them.
