AMERICAN Hungarian Journal Susan Jancso It’s a Dog’s World The other day I was walking over to my neghbor’s house for a swim (she keeps her pool temperature at an even 98 degrees Fahrenheit all winter long) when a surprising thing happened. The two figures by the entrance, that looked like statues people like to keep in their gardens, came to life and two huge dogs came barking at me. They looked rather menacing, so I’m not ashamed to confess, I ran back home and inquired on the phone why the extra guarding measures? Before, there was only the "Attention, the dog bites!" sign and the burglar alarm to keep intruders away. Henrietta told me the dogs weren’t hers, they just came from somewhere and settled in her inviting front yard. She thought they were "rather friendly", yet she wisely chose the back door to get in and out of her house while they were "guarding" it. Among all the animals, man has traditionally considered the dog his best friend. Touching stories, veritable legends were born about perceptive, courageous, loyal dogs who sometimes saved lives - let me just mention Lassie, Benji, Jack London’s "singing dog", or the little lapdog that led neighbors to Nicole Simpson’s body. An additional point in the dog’s favor - as opposed to friends - is that he does not talk. These days, however, when the world has gone to the dogs, we have more and more problems with our four-legged friends. Here in America, we hear daily about cases where the dog bites the mailman, maims a jogger or mangles a baby. Particularly, pitbulls are at the center of attention because of their vicious, sometimes deadly attacks. Like in most other (negative) things, our native Hungary has quickly caught up with the Western World in the matter of pitbull attacks. Several weeks ago the Hungarian papers reported that a 72- year-old woman was torn to pieces by vicious dogs in the town of Gödöllő. The two "suspects" in the case, two bull-terriers of the "Fészek” hotel, have been taken into custody, and their owner, Tibor Papp charged with negligence. Nobody really believes the case will go very far. There have been accusations of the dogs’ misconduct last year, but the five pitbulls are still roaming the neighborhood, in spite of current law allowing only one dog per residence, and only, if the fences are functional. In January 1994, government regulations were issued regarding the import and breeding of pitbulls and bandogs - a collective name for dogs used in fights - but it said nothing about owning the dogs. It appears the law was created to appease worried citizens fearing for their safety; on the other hand, it allowed owners to keep their dangerous pets which, some say, should be considered as weapons, needing a special permit to possess. Since pitbulls are similar in appearance to another, much less dangerous dog, the Staffordshire terrier, used to guard and protect people and property, the market value of deceased staffordshires’ birth records went sky-high (between 8 and 30 thousand forints). Pitbull owners will go to any lengths to keep their animals. Why? The Hungarian daily Népszabadság carried an article entitled "We Live in the Age of the Wild Dogs", which offers an explanation to the growing number of dogs in Hungary. Approximately 11/2 million dogs live in the country, and their number has multiplied in the past 10-15 years. Man, moving from the rural environment into crowded city life, trying to salvage the last vestiges of a more natural lifestyle, took with him his best friend, the dog. Not so much out of love for animals, but rather because the environment had become harsher, tougher, lacking in human relations and social solidarity. Fashion plays a large part in the fad to keep strange-looking, belligerent dogs with fancy names. The dog is a status symbol. If you live in a custom-designed large house, wear expensive designer clothes and drive huge foreign cars, you simply cannot walk around with a sheepdog at your heels. The blood-thirsty, fierce pitbull projects force. Our time does not favor smart and kind dogs - remarks the writer, although, by his own admission, he prefers "shaggy, outcast stray dogs" and claims that ferocious killer animals have no place among humans. Unfortunately, we live in the age of the wild dogs. The misfortune that befell the woman at Gödöllő was not an isolated case. Just a few days earlier, another woman was maimed and lost an eye in a dog attack. Just days ago, a pitbull attacked a policeman who was lucky enough to have a gun at hand. Now he has to stand trial for having shot the dog. What should he have done? Wait to be eaten alive? The conclusion, as stated by Zsolt Várszegi, president of the Hungarian Dog Breeders Organization: "Many people keep fighting dogs as a means to live out their innate aggressivity." Mr. Várszegi admits the law is not being obeyed, pitbulls continue to be bred and fights are organized under the police’s nose. He adds: "Laws are no good unless they can be enforced." Pastor Dr. Béla Bónis, (310) 430-0876; Caretaker: Dr. Béla Bíró, (310) 597-7459 ON ADVENT’S second Sunday, the sermon focused on another "first-person" saying of Jesus: "I am the good shepherd..." (John 10:11). Among all the names given to Jesus, none stirs the imagination of His followers more than this name of "the good shepherd". Even in our machine-age town and city life, the name still quickens old and familiar thoughts of green pastures and still waters, of a Companion travelling with us through the valley of the shadow, of the Protector who comes to our defense when the wolves of evil would catch and scatter us. But even more vividly, we see a beloved Figure, staff in one hand and in the other arm holding a lamb safe against His breast. Sometimes, the figure of the lamb changes, perhaps to that of an old and feeble sheep, perhaps to that of a "black" sheep. For all this is what Jesus as the Good Shepherd is to those who know Him, and whose lives He has touched. To little children He stands for everything good and kind and altogether lovely, everything calculated to inspire them to sing "Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world.” To the aged and troubled, to all who are beaten down by life, He is the incarnation of man’s Refuge and Strength and Present Help. And to all who wander far from God, He is the type and shadow of the Everlasting Mercy.
