AMERICAN Hungarian Journal An Evening at the THEATER • "The Lady of Camelias" in New York The Hungarian community of New York has been looking forward to the 11th season of the Hungarian Theater of New York, which took off with a flair on a sunny Sunday in October. The large auditorium of the Wagner Theater was filled to capacity for the performance of "The Lady of Camelias". The romantic role of the worldly courtesan Marguerite, created on film by Greta Garbo and played to perfection by Gizi Bajor in Budapest, now came to life in the magnificent performance of Elisabeth de Charay (Erzsi Cserey to her Hungarian friends). Ms. Charay is the director of the Hungarian Theater there, and is said to be the most beautiful Hungarian actress in America. She was very convincing, and her costumes added to the illusion of another time and another place. There was not an eye left dry when she died in Armand’s arms. Her partner was a guest artist from Budapest, Károly Újlaki, and he was just as good as any Hollywood star could have been. He acts well and is very goodlooking, tall and blond. They made a great couple on the stage, and with every move they made, with every word they said, they evoked an istant reaction in the hearts of the audience. The father was played by Szilárd Szabó, who looked as if he had just stepped forth from Dumas’ novel in his gray top hat. All the other characters were played by excellent actors and actresses as well as singers: Iván Zoltán Vas, Marika Dómján, Gabriella Lendvay, Lajos Nagy, and there was even a genuine belly dancer. After the intermission, a oneact comedy by Lajos Zilahy was performed with equal success. Ms. Charay gave proof of her sense of humor in this wittiest of Zilah/s plays. Besides the actors already mentioned, Kriszta Berecz and Mihály Kátai deserve favorable mention. Musical director was pianist Tamás Siklós, and Mimi Mautner said the introduction. Gábor Gyukics, a seven-foot tall young man also introduced the plays in English, because there were a lot of Americans in the audience. There were articles about this event in the New York Times and the New York Post. The success of the performance is largely the merit of Elisabeth de Charay, who is well know around Broadway and in Off- Broadway theaters. She has a part in the latest Woody Allen movie as well. She is the heart and soul of the Hungarian Theater of New York. (Reported by Claire Kenneth, New York) English Page by SUSAN JANCSO The Governor Pete Wilson Committee announced the formation of a bi-partisan coalition of California’s ethnic groups in support of his campaign. The coalition consists of ethnic groups ranging from Bulgarians to Slovaks. Chairing the coalition are noted nuclear physicist Dr. Edward Teller of Stanford University and actress Ruta Lee (Lithuanian) of Bel Air. Named by Governor Wilson to leadership positions for the Hungarian community were Dr. Frank de Balogh, State chairman, and co-chairmen Maria Fényes, Andrew Friedman and Julius Stubner. Several leaders have issued statements in support of the Governor to California’s Hungarian community which appear below: DR. EDWARD TELLER Fellow Hungarians in California have every reason to think and act carefully in the most important, upcoming gubernatorial election. We are deeply interested in the development of California and in the less direct, but nevertheless important role the governor of California plays in the national scene. In my opinion, Governor Wilson is fulfilling an outstanding role in steering our state through the difficult period of great and not fully justified changes imposed by Washington. He has given full opportunity to legal immigrants and contributed greatly to the California tradition of positive concern for the future. DR. FRANK DE BALOGH I enthusiastically support the reelection of Governor Pete Wilson for one critically important reason - he has consistently demonstrated outstanding leadership during his time in office. In dealing with California’s many crises - economic recession, defense cutbacks, the L.A. riots, natural disasters, immigration, and crime - he has always been decisive, forceful and effective. When Hungarian churches were threatened by arson, Governor Wilson directed that the State of California contribute $10,000 to the reward to apprehend the criminals involved. He also issued a state-wide press release condemning this vicious crime against our community. Governor Wilson is a friend on whom we Hungarians can count. He has truly earned your vote on November 8th. DR. ANDREW FRIEDMAN I base my support for Governor Wilson primarily on his tough stand against violent criminals. As Chairman of the L.A. Police Permit Panel, I know that the number one problem facing Californians is crime. Governor Wilson was instrumental in having the "Three Strikes” law passed in California, which guarantees that violent criminals will face many years in prison. In addition, Governor Wilson advocates the death penalty which, I believe, is a deterrent to crime. His opponent does not support the death penalty and sends a signal to criminals that under a Brown administration, criminals need not fear. FÉNYES MÁRIA Wilson kormányzót újraválasztásakor olyan problémákért teszik felelőssé, ami az egész világon történik, mint gazdasági válság, munkanélküliség. Erről ő nem tehet. Eddigi működése engem a reagani időkre emlékeztet, mikor mi biztonságban éreztük magunkat, mert tudtuk, hogy olyan kezekben van a hatalom, mely a nép érdekeit nézi. Hogy hozzánk, magyarokhoz Pete Wilson milyen közel áll, arról meggyőződhettünk az elmúlt évek során. Szavazzunk rá. JULIUS STUBNER As we all know, crime, unemployment and the steady inflow of illegal aliens are causing an enormous problem to the state of California. In order to successfully solve these, an able and knowledgeable leading politician is needed. The way I see it, the above difficulties could only be eliminated with good results by Pete Wilson, the present Governor. His expertise, his mental and physical working ability would be the token of a peaceful, secure and prosperous future for the state of California. Dr. de Balogh invites the Hungarian community to attend a giant rally in support of the Governor Wilson and other candidates for state office on Sunday, November 6th from 12 Noon to 2 p.m., 137 West Walnut, in the City of Monrovia. There will be ethnic booths - including Hungarian - with items for sale, entertainment, and fun! All members of the Hungarian Republican Federation are expected to attend this important event. The Hungarian community is also invited to attend the Victory Party to be held starting at 8 p.m., Tuesday, November 8th at the Doubletree Hotel, Los Angeles Airport, 5400 West Century Blvd. in Los Angeles. Hungarian Republican Federation members are also asked to attend this rally to represent our community.
