AMERICAN Hungarian Journal What Is The Best Investment For Your Children? The Power of Piano Lessons Slowly, a child grows, develops, under the watchful eyes of parents, eager to nurture the bud into its full potential of beauty and thought. If neglected, the bud blooms, withers and fades. It becomes just another plant, well developed perhaps, but without color. The following would like to be the parent’s guide to music lessons. It is our hope that, by studying its contents, many of your questions regarding a unique and easy way for your child to successfully study music will be clarified. You and your child will share a special experience together in the course of weekly lessons, in which your child will grow in self-esteem, creative, positive thinking, and musical achievement. The goal is to motivate your children to want to learn (not just music) and to help them enjoy creating music. * From beginners to advanced instruction available. Keyboard - Piano Skills Playing basic, simple songs with two hands, relating staff notes to keyboard, playing chords, playing "by ear" (improving memorizing ability), creating their own songs and original sounds. Ear Training Melodic: hearing pitches and melodies, and matching these sounds by singing and playing the piano. Harmonic: understanding the sounds and qualities of chords and how they work in music. This technical area of hearing is made simple. This training lays the foundation for accompanying improvising and "playing by ear" in later years. Singing: The enjoyment of vocal production as well as the enhancement of pitch matching skill; development of "tonal memory" which enables them to memorize music, creating original tunes; responding in reverse and sequence patterns, sight-singing etc. StafT Reading: Identification of 4 octaves of notes using the Bass Clef and the Treble Clef. Rhythm: Feeling and Experiencing "Beats" in different rhythms, developing small and large motor coordinations so vital to reading ability. Clapping, counting, playing on different kinds of rhythmical instruments, and writing and playing their own notation. Composition: Making up their own original melodies and rhythms; writing and playing them on the keyboard/piano. DID YOU KNOW? Based upon research studies, 80-90 percent of the brain’s motor control capability is devoted to the hands, mouth and throat. Developing control in these areas - the ones involved in music-making-stimulates the entire brain, leading to increased total capability. The study of music leads to improvement in the following areas: coordination, sense of timing, muscular, vocal, visual and aural development. According to the studies, the students involved in music had higher marks in every area. The longer they had been involved with music, the higher the scores. This can be attributed to the bilateralism of the brain in music: both the analytical and the subjective/artistic sides are nurtured. First exposure to muscic learning must be an enjoyable experience for a young child. The relaxed, fun-filled environment at music lessons is the key to future success in enjoying "making music" for a lifetime. by EMESE KOVACH Professional examination available at all levels. CURRENT EVENTS Kovács Confers With Butros Ghali NEW YORK - Hungarian Foreign Minister László Kovács told UN Secretary General Butros Ghali he wants to maintain close institutional and personal links with the latter in his capacity as chairman of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE). Kovács outlined the main endeavors of Hungarian foreign policy, adding that Hungary was invariably committed to the principles laid down in the UN Charter. Both politicians stressed the importance of strengthening the crisis management and preventive activity of the UN. They also touched on issues related to a division of labor between the world body and regional institutions. Kovács said that his aim as chairman of the CSCE (Hungary will hold this post next year) would be to develop a more practical cooperation in the maintenance of peace and crisis management. US $33 Million Invested in Hungary BUDAPEST - The Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) of the United States has invested $33 million in Hungary so far - deputy state secretary for the Ministry of Industry and Trade István Major said at a press conference on the background of the OPIC delegations visit to Budapest, beginning October 17. The 39-member OPIC delegation, which represents 26 U.S. firms and banks, is to have talks with 80 to 100 leading Hungarian business people over the following three days. The Americans are primarily interested in the country’s electric energy, crude oil and natural gas, chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. Horn Meets Flemish Prime Minister BUDAPEST - Hungary would welcome it if the European Union specified the date of starting talks on its full membership, and expects Flanders to back this endeavor, Hungarian Prime Minister Gyula Horn told his Flemish counterpart Luc van den Brande in Budapest. Van den Brande said the Flemish regional government would meet the request favorably. In his view, the talks may start in 1996, or early 1997 at the latest. He said the Flemish government sees a good chance for Hungary’s admission to the European Union. Hungarian Misiter of Industry and Trade László Pál, who attended the talks, said that so far 70 Flemish companies had made investments in Hungary. The two governments have now decided to encourage this process. Pál expressed the hope that cooperation would intensify between Hungarian and Flemish companies. IMF Calls For Stricter Measures MADRID - Finance Minister László Békési talked to reporters about his recent meeting with Massimo Russo, European director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Madrid. The IMF is of the view that Hungary’s net international debt should not increase in 1995 and that the current account deficit should not exceed total direct foreign cash investment next year. The Hungarian government projects a $2-2.5 billion C/A deficit and direct foreign capital investment of $1.5 - 2 billion in 1995. The Hungarian government has targeted a current deficit of the general government (not including principal debt repayments) of 6-7 percent of GDP in 1995. The IMF, however, argues that this ration should not be higher than 4-5 percent. Although there is currently a wide divergence between the two positions, Békési said that there would be several further rounds of talks in an attempt to reach a consensus. Temporary Ban on Sale of Powder Paprika in Hungary BUDAPEST - A temporary ban has been imposed on the sale of powder paprika in stores and markets throughout Hungary. The Ministry of Industry and Trade has banned sale after paprika adulterated with poisonous substance has been found in several places in Hungary. A number of people have been taken ill. Staff members with the State Health Institute, the Commercial Quality Control Institute and the Supervisory Board for Consumer Protection have been continuously checking warehouse stocks, restaurants and food processing plants to prevent the sale of paprika contaminated with lead. The minister of industry has issued a decree under which all powder paprika in retail and wholesale trade must be collected in ten days. It has not been decided whether to examine the entire quantity of paprika estimated at about 100 or 150 tons, and whether to continue the sale of those batches that are found clean, or to destroy the whole shipment. Hungary produces 8 to 9 thousand tons of powder paprika each year. Processing of this year’s crop is already in progress, which means that clean paprika will soon be sold across the country.
