AMERICAN Hungarian Journal LOS ANGELES Social Events ANDREW STEVENS, the successful California businessman equally well-known in Budapest and in Los Angeles, and the charming and dedicated immigration lawyer Ildikó Csető have officially tied the knot on Thanksgiving day, pledging to love and cherish each other for as long as they both shall live. They quietly celebrated the event at the Csárdás Restaurant, and it seemed they both had plenty to be thankful for. We wish the new couple lots of joy and happiness! TIBOR TOLLAS, the celebrated poet and editor of the Guardian, the untiring champion of Hungarian unity is once again touring the Hungarian communities of the United States in search of support to secure a few more months of existence for his publication, which is in danger of extinction because of dwindling resources. Saturday afternoon from 3 to 6 p.m. he met with friends and supporters at the Hollywood Reformed Church. Consul General Mr. András Márton, his wife Adrienne and their son were among the guests, as well as many old friends and fellow freedomfighters, including the Hefty family and Éva Szörényi. Refreshments, snacks and pastries were provided by the church, friends, and the Csárdás Restaurant. In spite of the passing years that have taken a toll of his health, Mr. Tollas spoke with the old fire and enthusiasm, urging Hungarians throughout the world to forget their personal and political feuds and do something constructive for their homeland, taking full advantage of their possibilities and capabilities to help. He stressed that the Los Angeles community has always been the first and strongest supporter of his work, and he praised the devoted, and often unrecognized contribution of the women in particular, the wives of whose values he made no secret of admiring. He answered questions and listened to input about recent experiences in Hungary, and concluded the evening, by popular request, with some of his poetry in soulful performance. Anyone who wants to help save the Guardian and purchase Mr. Tollas’ inspiring books of poetry sould call Éva Szörényi at (818) 762-7320 or our office at (818) 786-0315. HUNGARY Foreign Ministers Meet in Debrecen The meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Central European Initiative concluded with a joint statement and international press conference. This was the last of this year’s conferences hosted by Hungary. Next year the honor of presiding over these meetings will go to Italy. Topics discussed by the leading This page written by ATA accredited translator SUSAN JANCSO diplomats ot Austria, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Macedonia, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia ranged from economic cooperation through political issues and the upholding of minority rights to expanding the Central European Initiative by admitting new members. Besides the delegates of member countries, representatives of the European Rebuilding and Development Bank were also present. This London-based financial institution is behind most projects of the Initiative. In addition to one-on-one discussions, leaders of the Four of Visegrád set down at the negotiating table together as well. What Really Hurts Hungary Danger From the Right In his response to a controversial article by the Italian newspaper La Stampa, Árpád Göncz stated that the press has always had the right to evaluate situations and statements of politicians as they saw fit; this, however, does not mean that he agrees with everything they said. Regarding the dangers of right extremist activity, he said: "Cause and effect are not identical but they are correlated. It is not so much the article of La Stampa or other foreign publications that can hurt Hungary’s interests, but rather the political processes that provide the basis for such writings. There is no better tool than honest dialogue to clear up misunderstandings and differences of opinion." Some circles believe the President of the Republic inflicted grave injuries on Hungary’s international reputation with the interview he gave to La Stampa, by "calling in foreign interest, just like the Bolsheviks were called in in 1956," and he should at least have refuted the slander and asked for corrective action. Particularly juicy bits were statements attributed to Mr. Göncz to the effect that there is a strong danger to Hungary from the extreme right, and that the electronic media (radio, television and the MTI news agency) have become the mouthpieces of the government. The subtitle, "Even the President is Against the Right Wing Government: Let Europa help!" evoked quite an uproar in itself. Sándor Lezsák declared at a national conference: demagogy is the real danger, be it from the right or the left. Home is a place where hearts are sure of each Other. — John Keble Re-Opening of Claims for Hungarian Compensation I have been asked to inform the Hungarian community in the United States that the Hungarian compensation claims filing period will be re-opened for one month in 1994 to file new claims. The Hungarian Embassy in Washington, D.C. informs us that the time period for filing a new claim for compensation will be from January 1, 1994 to January 31, 1994 only. Claimants can get the necessary claim forms from the Embassy, from any Hungarian Consulate or from my office. Those people will be eligible to file claims if they or their families lost businesses or property in Hungary from 1939 to 1989 or if they suffered a loss of freedom due to persecution in Hungary from 1939 to 1989. Those people from the Hungarian-speaking parts of Czechoslovakia, Ukraine and Romania are also eligible for compensation for persecution. During the previous filing periods in 1991 and 1992, some 19,400 Hungarian-Americans filed for compensation. Many of these people have already received their compensation awards. Groups have been formed to assist those people who have received their awards to advise them how to manage their compensation coupons in Hungary in order to get full value for the coupons. Additional information on this matter is enclosed. We would appreciate it if you would bring this news to the attention of your readers in view of the very short time periods involved. Catherine E.
