JÁNOS MAJDAN: THE EFFECT OF THE RAILWAY ON THE SMALL TRANSDANUBIAN VILLAGES (Summary) At the height of the 19*h century the railway was destined to play an increasingly important role in Hungary too. The Transdanubian network built between 1849 and 1967 represented Austrian interests. The lines strating out of Austrian territories carried agrucultural products grown on Transdanubian soil to Vienne and Graz and through the port of Trieste to various foreign countries. With the Hungarian State Railways established after the Austro —Hungarian compromise of 1867 His Budapest government intended to support and to further Hungarian interests. Particular importance was ascribed to the establishment of foreign trade relations avoiding Vienna and for this reason a direct train-service between the than Hungarian port of Fiume and Budapest was urged for. Also the railway-line built between the Hungarian capital and Pécs in 1882 provided for a direct communication with the sea. Partly because of foreign trade and also because of the reorganization of the domestic market, this main line played an important role in the economic life of the Transdanubian area. Using the statistics summarized by Edvi Illés Aladár in 1895 all the districts that reinforced resp. in other places reorganized their earlier relations can easily be identified. This article examines the organization of small villages into districts in many respects. The summary also projected to the map is the first step in this work which — in the future — could serve as a basis for a more detailed analysis of trade.
