VOL. XLVI. AUGUST 21, 1963 NUMBER 16. GET BEHIND THE CONVENTION! The time is almost here. In exactly two weeks and five days from the publication of this English issue of our official organ, the Chairman of the 25th Quadrennial Convention of the William Penn Fraternal Association will pick up his gavel to sound the opening of another great national meeting of the William Penn membership, which convention will officially begin Monday morning, September 9, 1963, in the Pittsburgh Room of the Penn-Sheraton Hotel, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Yes, time is fleeing — even for the William Penn convention! That is why it is of paramount importance that we all prepare for the coming big date for, mark you this well, every William Penn member will be part and parcel of the convention — whether delegate or member at home. The convention must be of the utmost concern to all! We feel it is extremely essential to the future welfare of the Association to point out that the convention belongs to each and every member. True the delegates will be the direct participants but their authority to act comes from the local members who elected them to attend the convention for the express purpose of looking out for the present and future interests of the members at large. The closing of the elections for delegates certainly did not automatically suspend the right — and the duty — of the members who will stay at home during the convention to exercise their legitimate interest in the period before the convention and the crucial week of this national meeting of the William Penn. Just what can a stay-at-home member do to help assure the success of the convention that is soon to be? The simple answer is for every adult — even juvenile — member to GET BEHIND THE CONVENTION! And what do those four words mean? Simply that the membership at large ought now, and in particular the next two weeks, give every moral support and enthusiastic encouragement to the delegates whom they elected to represent them at the convention. After all the convention is comprized of delegates and so we mean the delegates when we advise our members to GET BEHIND THE CONVENTION! It is positively not enough to elect the delegates and then virtually abandon them after the elections. In most cases there was competition for the great honor of becoming a William Penn delegate. Of course there were the losers and the winners. No matter the. results, after the elections it was of unselfish interest'for the members to back without reservation the successful candidate. Those whose “favorite sons” were not elected delegates will do the Association an enormous disservice if they fail to bolster the elected delegates in the discharge of their critically important convention duties and responsibilities. Now, before the opening of the convention, is the ideal time for the members to show concrete faith in their elected delegates, to encourage them in their preparations, to discuss matters of convention interest, and, not the least, to act in a manner toward the delegates that will give them the moral support they must have from home. The fruitful outcome of the William Penn convention hangs not alone on the delegates but very much on their constituents at home. WE ALL MUST DO OUR PART IF WE ARE NOT TO LET DOWN OUR WILLIAM PENN. “Rescue breathing” ia the newest Red Cros3 lifesaving technique. The method is simple. The results are startling—thousands of people already owe their lives to this special form of artificial respiration. Help Red Cross find even more new ways to save lives. This year—give all you can.
