VOL. XLIV. JULY 19, 1961 51 NUMBER 7. REPRINT from THE FRATERNAL MONITOR — May, 1961 New William Penn President’s Career Embraces Long Period Following the death of William Penn Fraternal Association president Coloman Revesz on January 13, 1961, the Board of Directors, in special session, elected Julius Macker, one of their fellow Board members, as successor to the position vacated with the sudden and unexpected passing of Mr. Revesz. Certainly no stranger or little known member assumed the William Penn presidency on February 1, 1961. Here was not only a long-time member but a veteran leader who could proudly look back upon more than twenty years’ service as a national officer, first of the old Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association, now of the William Penn Fraternal Association — a fraternalist whose branch service even pre-dates his society labors. Back in 1939, when Convention Delegate Julius Macker, then president of Branch 36, Detroit, Michigan, was elected to the Board of Directors, even he in all his victory and optimism did not visualize, or dare be so self-assured, as to what the future held for him with the Association. He could not see that thenceforth his service as national leader and officer would be continuous — a director for the two terms of 1939-1947; vice president 1947- 1961; chairman of the board several times and at the time of his unanimous election to the presidency. Now as William Penn president Mr. Macker has reached the pinnacle of his career, and wishing him success and pledging loyalty are all the society’s branches and the many thousands of its members. What are the reasons behind the successful fraternal career of Julius Macker whose tenure of office is among the longest on record in the category of national officers? The simple answer is that Mr. Macker, throughout his service for the Association, has given to it his “all,” for not only is his national service to the William Penn common knowledge to the membership, but his local efforts in the Detroit area placed him among the most active leaders in that large segment of the Association’s membership. Honesty and sincerity have been the badges of honor identifying Mr. Macker over the years. He believes in dealing with all society problems with an honest and fundamental approach, his convictions are always sincere ones, and, in line with his affection for the Association, he enthusiastically endorses any decision, any action, any movement which he construes is for the benefit of the society. The 1955 Ralcoczi-Verhovay merger is an accomplished fact in part because Mr. Macker — and his fellow officers — believed that the union of the two great Hungarian American societies would be for the best interest of all. The complete Verhovay-William Penn story about Julius Macker, member, officer and fraternalist, would encompass much more print than used here, but the “essence” of this new William Penn leader and president has been revealed. ' Then there is Julius Macker in private life. He, as well as Mrs. Macker, were born in Hungary and came to this country many years ago. They are the parents of two sons, Robert, married and the father of three children, and Edward, who is single. The Mackers have lived in Detroit for many years. In 1945 he gave up a highly skilled profession he had been following and entered the business world by opening the J. M. Sporting Goods store in Wyandotte, a suburb of Detroit. Now that Mr. and Mrs. Macker have moved to Pittsburgh, operation of the business will be continued by the two sons. Julius Macker is now president of the William Penn Fraternal Association, by unanimous decision of the Board of Directors, representing the total membership. A score and more years of experience favor his tenure of office, and the future looks bright and well! The WILLIAM PENN FRATERNAL ASSOCIATION maintains a corps of skilled field men.
