\ V PAGE 2 William Penn November 19, 1958. 50th Anniversary Observed by Branch 108-V “BY-LINE FROM 129” EVELYN BOUCHER — Branch 129-V — Secretary-Correspondent On October 10, 1908, fifty years ago, 18 Hungarians with similar ideals combined their efforts to found Branch 108, now 108-V, of the then Verhovay Aid Association. Seat of the new branch was — and still is — Youngstown, Ohio. In revered memory of the founding of their branch, the members of 108-V celebrated the occasion Sunday evening, October 5, 1958, with banquet, program and dance well attended in the Youngstown Calvin Center. The event was enhanced in its sentimental value as honor was paid two still living charter members, Joseph Juhasz and Stephen Matisz, and the “Acknowledged” title was conferred along with the Illustrious Citation and the Gold Emblem on two veteran branch workers, one of them a charter member. The program was opened properly with the playing o: our National Anthem by the Sikora orchestra. This was followed by the introduction of John Kostya, president of Branch 108-V, who assumed the duties of toastmaster, one of his first acts being to introduce the Rev. John Botty, pastor of the Hungarian Reformed Church, who said the prayer of grace before the guests helped themselves to the delicious food set on beautifully decorated tables. First speaker of the evening was the Honorable Frank X. Kryzan, mayor of Youngstown, Ohio and a member of Branch 21-V of the same city, who in words sincere gave import to the 50 year existence of Branch 108-V. The mayor then read the resolution of city council in which is perpetuated the accomplishments over the 50 year period of the branch and its members. Mayor Kryzan was roundly applauded at the conclusion of his address. Next, the toastmaster introduced Stephen Matisz and Joseph Juhasz, only living founding members of Branch 108-V. The audience of members and guests very warmly expressed their sentiments in loud applause. Director Michael Korosy followed to pay tribute and present to Joseph Juhasz and Joseph Batta the Illustrious Citation and the Gold Emblem for their many years of loyal service to Branch and Association. Greetings to the jubilee-celebrating branch were expressed by Stephen Matasy, president of Branch 21-V, Youngstown, Ohio, and a former legal adviser of the once Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association, and by Father Bunyko, Rev. John Botty and Rev. Alexander Martin speaking in the name of their respective parishes. Now National President Coloman Revesz, who had journeyed from the Home Office to be present at the elaborate Branch 108-V 50th anniversary observance, spoke in tones of nostalgia. Mr. Revesz remarked that he had joined the former Verhovay Aid Association as a member of this branch, and held his first office, that of Juvenile Order manager, at Branch 108. He then named the charter members, Joseph Mátyási, Julius Kenyezlei, Andrew Bodnar, Joseph Juhasz, Joseph Szimicz, John Szimicz, John Deak, Andrew Nagy, Stephen Matisz, Frank Orosz, Alexander Bodnar, George Czigler, Joseph Kerti, Mrs. Michael Meglecz and Frank Juhasz, and he recalled the names of the three Youngstown members, Ernest M. Nemenyi, Frank J. Brogley and Joseph Turner, who became members of the Board of Directors. The National President stated that this affair wras an inspiration to future greater things from Branch 108-V. Finally, he asked that October 6 and October 23, crucial dates in Hungarian, history, be revered forever so long as a Hungarian exists on the face of the earth. Mayor Kovach, of Campbell, Ohio, who was present with Mrs. Kovach, conveyed his greetings to the assembled members and guests of Branch 108-V. Toastmaster Kostya at this point introduced various representatives of churches and societies, and among them were: Joseph Juhasz, Joseph Szemetko and John Bozsvay, Branch 14-V, Cleveland, Ohio: Paul Magyary and District Manager Coloman R. Bertalan, Branch 45-V, Cleveland, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Michael Simo and John Buzogány, Branch 189-V, Alliance, Ohio; St. Stephen Society, Campbell Hungarian Home, Old American Hungarians, St. George Society, Greek Rite Catholic Church, the two Reformed Churches, St. Stephen Congregation, Citizens Club, Field Supervisor Gabriel Nameth, of the William Penn Fraternal Association, and Mrs. Nameth; District Manager Louis E. Toth, Youngstown, Ohio. Benediction was pronounced by Father Alexander Punyko. The program continued with dancing to the music of the Sikora orchestra. Branch 108-V, Youngstown, Ohio, publicly expresses its deep gratitude to all who helped make its jubilee anniversary the wonderful success it was. We were sorry to hear that our District Manager, Lou Tokár, was in University Hospital for a week during the early part of October. We hope you are well on the road to recovery, Lou, as we certainly miss you at our monthly and directors meetings. — 129-V — Thanksgiving will soon come. The officers of the William Penn Fraternal Association join in wishing you a pleasant Thanksgiving. If we all stop — and think — we have much to be thankful for, but I think the greatest thing is just being born in the United States. Perhaps your party was defeated in the November election. However, it is up to both sides now to pull together and keep the United States of America free from war. Above all, let us all offer a prayer for lasting peace throughout the world. — 129-V — May we offer a belated happy anniversary to Betty and Dick Hinds who celebrated 19 wonderful years on October 18th. (Dick is bartender at the club and is Mickey’s brother.) A large three-layer cake was presented to them at the club and those present received pieces of the cake. May we add, “We hope you have many more happy anniversaries.” Neither do we want to overlook Wishing Betty a happy birthday. It seems her anniversary and birthday are both on the same date, so she has real reason for a double celebration. _ 129-V — Our club is now going through the final phase of remodeling. The front, comprised mostly of frosted glass, is completed, and it certainly makes an attractive building. The bar has been relocated and is being rebuilt, the kitchen has been made larger with more up-to-date conveniences, and the whole interior is being decorated in pastels. There will be new booths installed and draperies will beautify the windows. All this remodeling is not coming too soon as it is hard to find an empty chair or table at the club any longer. With the interior enlarged considerably, the added space will certainly be put to use. — 129-V — STORK DEPARTMENT — This comes a little late but we Want to congratulate our President, George Tokár, and his wife Bonnie, on the birth of their son, Kevin Lee, born in September. From all reports he is a “bouncing” baby boy. George tells us that there is nothing wrong with his voice! Congratulations also to Mr. and Mrs. Marty Finta whose son was born October 15th. Marty is a William Penn bowler. The proud 1 grandpa is Roy Fee, president of the bowlers this year, and the uncle is Bill Wells, league secretary. I would say that it is a family affair, and there is no doubt but that young Finta will grow up to be a bowler. _ 129-V — AN IMPORTANT REMINDER TO ALL MEMBERS — Election of branch officers will be held December 11th at the William Penn Home, 1501 Parsons Avenue.
