PAGE 6 William Penn September 17, 1958 f& MOTOR CITY NEWS BRANCH 18-V — DETROIT, MICHIGAN (Formerly Branches 36-V and 443-V) By Jolán Luca» Fall is here with its invigorating weather, hrilliant colors and a full garden growth. It also brings a heightened interest in branch, social and sports activities in connection wih William Penn fraternalism. But first, to bring you up to date... At the August meeting, the neverending discussion of a WILLIAM PENN Fraternal Home for the Detroit area was again proposed. To look into the matter, a Fraternal Home Committee was appointed as follows: Jesse Somergary, branch president Martin Marton, Steve Csabi, _ Elvira László and Jolán Lucas. Many arguments pro and con have been made with regard to a fraternal home in past years, and the matter has been thoroughly discussed. If a suitable location and building can be found, it is possible that we may reach a satisfactory conclusion. In my personal opinion a fraternal home of our own would solve many loose ends. Bowling, as usual, was brought to the attention of the membership. There will be at least one branchsponsored team. With the organizing of the Detroit WILLIAM PENN SPORTS CLUB which is just about concluded, the financing of bowling teams will be automatically taken care of by the club members, with just a little more help from the branch at the beginning. Another very satisfactory meeting was held at the Lucas residence on August 21 when the constitution was again thoroughly discussed. A final discussion and elections will take place directly after the branch meeting on September 14th, at which time fundraising projects will also be determined. If the William Penn Bowling Tournament-Fellowship Days does come to Detroit in 1959, a well-organized Sports Club will do all in its power to welcome the out-of-town guests. The WILLIAM PENN JUNIOR CLUB will resume activities thismonth with an enlarged program. Those parents who would like to see their youngsters take an interest in a club of their own, please contact Mrs. Julia’Danko at Avenue 3-0677, or Geza and Helen Madarasz at Dunkirk 1-3424, for full details. Parents are welcome to act as counselors in various activities .— also donations of games and toys and other materials for active youngsters will be welcome. Financial aid is always a necessity and will be thoroughly appreciated. Let’s make the Detroit Junior Club one of the most active in the association! Branch meetings are really fun, take my word for it. The more members who attend, the greater the interest. Make it a regular habit — the second Sunday of every month at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, 1125 Fort street, corner of Montie Road in Lincoln Park. Next meeting will be Sunday, October 12 at 2 p. m. SHARP. There is a possibility that a Social Afternoon will also be scheduled directly after the meeting for the benefit of the two branch clubs — the Junior Club and the Sports Club. Some of the women have been talking about forming a Women’s Club. Those who are interested please come to the meetings so that you may discuss it with the other members. Dont’ forget the address of the Detroit District Office — 3920 Fort Street, Lincoln Park — telephone Warwick 8-0887. All dues and other business is efficiently and adequately expedited at this office. If at any time you have questions about your membership certificate, call the office and one of the district managers well be happy to take care of your business. District Managers are Stephen Lukacs, Stephen Úsztok and John Vass. ABOUT MEMBERS: John Denes, vice-president of branch 18-V, had a serious automobile accident in July. We are glad that he feels better and it was good to see him at the August meeting. Steve Csabi, whose leg was broken last winter, is a fine example of William Penn fraternalism. He has made the trip to branch meetings ever since he was able to be up and around — even if around is still with, the help of a cane. I had a visit from Cleveland, Ohio from District Manager Steve Leczo of Branch 43-R. Mr. Leczo is married to a charming lady named Betty. They have three children, Julie Ann, aged 4, Susan who is 2, and baby Steve, Jr., one year old. Steve is probably the youngest district manager in the association and he was pleased about our branch meetings. Hq told me that he was surprised how we backed up our district managers when they made their various reports- Doesn’t every branch do likewise ? Young 12 year old Kenny Lorincz, son of one of our top-notch bowlers, is considered one of the fastest young pitchers in the Taylor Township Little League. Better sign him up with the Detroit Tigers so Pop can watch him while on duty at Briggs Stadium. * # * Brevity may be the soul of wit, but there is nothing quite so frustrating as trying to make a full report for more than 4200 members in a very short column. My youthful enthusiasms may have been tempered by a realization of my mature limitations, but you still can’t keep a good woman down ... So there! Until the October issue.
