Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Balog, Sr., residents of Eldorado, Illinois, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary October 26, 1957 by visiting their five children and their families in Chicago. The happy occasion was celebrated exactly fifty years from the date of their marriage in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Mr. Balog -was born September 14, 1884 and Mrs Balog, the former Christina Kovach, was bom July 24, 1887. Both are natives of Bodony, County of Heves, Hungary. Mr. Balog came to The United States in Deaths at Branch 278-Mrs. James Hodik, bom Mary Tobias, died July 28, 1957 at the home of her son John. She was 72. The deceased, widow of James Hodik, was born in Bács-Bodrog County, Hungary. Survivors include sons Paul and John of Omaha,-a brother, Andrew Tobias, in Hungary, a sister, Mary Andre, and five grandchildren. She was laid out at the Larkin Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Monsignor Juricek officiating. Burial W'as in St. Mary’s Cemetery. * * * John Bennett, Sr. died at local Omaha hospital on September 16, 1957. He was 67 years old. The deceased was bom in Nagyida, Abauj-Torna County, Hungary. Mr. Balog retired after working in the coal mines for 45 years. They have three sons, Andy and Julius of Chicago, Vincent Jr. at home; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Korponya of Chicago, Mrs. Elizabeth Liner of Park Ridge, Illinois. There are eleven grandchildren. The Balogs are members of Branch 499-V Harrisburg, Illinois. Congratulations to you, Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Balog, Sr. Y Omaha, Nebraska married Elizabeth Barna July 30, 1909 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, sons Andrew, of Des Moines, Iowa, John, Jr., George and Nicholas, of Omaha, and daughters Mrs. Charles K. Nichols, of Lincoln, Nebraska, Mrs. B. J. Harbert, Mrs. W. F. St. Clair, Mrs W. H. Kohnhaase, of Omaha. Eighteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. Obsequies were held at the Crosby Kunold Mortuary and interment was at the Forest Lawn Cemetery. * * * May members Mrs. James Hodik and John Bennett, Sr. rest in their eternal reward.-CASPAR KUTI Mgr. Br. 278-V GOLDEN WEDDING ELMHURST COLLEGE Department of Hungarian Studies Scholarships and Grants Tuition scholarships of $800 to $1600 are offered to students of Hungarian descent and others. Students not of Hungarian ancestry are urged to apply for these scholarships. Modem language requirements for the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees are fulfilled by the study of Hungarian. Hungarian is related to the Finnish and Estonian languages. Awards are granted on the basis of the scholastic record of the high school students. Applicants must be in the upper ten percent of their graduating class. Financially needy students may apply for special grants. Students with a “C” grade average may apply. Awards for the second year and succeeding years will be made, provided the student’s record is consistent with his ability, and his need for assistance continues. These scholarships and grants are made available through the generosity of the American Hungarian Studies Foundation. Applications for scholarships and admission must be filed by March 15.
