October 16, 1957 PAGE 11 William Penn News From Northwestern Ohio BRANCH 27-V TOLEDO, OHIO By Stephen J. Ivancso To some readers who may read only the first paragraph of a column, we bring to your attention that the monthly meeting of Toledo, Branch 27-V, in November will be held on the first Sunday of the month, November 3rd: instead of the second Sunday as usual. This change is for the month of November only. The last meeting brought about a discussion concerning a Christmas party to be held for the children of our members. We would like volunteers to help make this party a success. Come to the November meeting, so that the final details and arrangements and date can be made. The William Penn Mixed League got under way at Lido Lanes in fine style. John Mokri, Jr. was elected President; Lynn Fetzer, Vice-President; Bill Smith, Secretary and Andrew Hasp is Treasurer of the League. The first night produced some wonderful results. Our “V.P.” Lynn — came up with a high single game of 209 — and Secretary Bill Smith’s 572 was high 3 game total. It looked! like the officers took all of the honors the first night. Members of Branch 27-V are really mauling the maples in the early part of the bowling season. To mention a few: Junior Powell is the hottest kegler in town — he has four 700 or better series and as many as 600 games. “All” Imre has a 279-712 series, . while Bill Krolak blasted in a 738 set for his first 700 series. Ace Nagy also got his first 700 — the total was 717 at Hagerty’s, Ace had a 278 game. BjII Smith had 690 — 279 single on opening night of the East End Traveling League. Seems as these boys are in midseason form already. Other fine scores so far are: Rollie Schmidt’s 687 at Swayne Field; Bus Carone’s 681 at Thyer Classic at the Marathon Alleys, and Rip Tinta's 643 at the Playdium. Among the women, Verdis Stephens is coming along fine with a 569 set; and Hazel Vischer, who started slow because of illness, came through with a 543 set. Keep it up, girls! Joseph Aranyosi and fcis charming wife, Sarah, enjoyed a week’s in the Northern wilds of Michigan. I wonder if Joe took along his camera to shoot some of Michigan’s beautiful scenery. JOE, by the way, has a photographic studio at Paine Avenue. Ernie and Sue Belegrin are enjoying the autumn out Phoenix, Arizona and Mexico way. This vacation should help Ernie (Pudgy) get back into bowling stride, with no excuses to think up, for having “zero” on the ball. Rev. Martin Hernady is back from his stay in Paris, Rome, etc. He showed us sopie very beautiful slides of the Vatican City, and many, many beautiful parts of Paris. It makes one want to start saving money to go to see world across the Atlantic Ocean. Our congratulations to Branch 59- V, Scalp Level, Pa., on their 50th Anniversary. I’m sorry that I could not personally attend, but the whole family was down with the flu, including your writer. Until next month, good bowling, and good health. Stephen J. Ivancso District Manager WILLIAM PENN WATCHT0WER By JOSEPH J. HORVATH — Cleveland, Ohio Frank Szabó superintendent for county engineer Bert Porter, has taken a three week vacation and will tour Canada, Western, and Southern United States. We heard that Joseph Drotos of Br. 45, was in the Hospital for an operation and is home resting up. Our best wishes for a full recovery. We heard through the grape vine that Frank J. Pokorny, Sr. may take himself a wife. He has been a Widower for a number of years. Nick Juhasz Sr., President of Br. 14, went on a vacation out of state thereby making Joseph Semetko Vice-President, temporarily the head of the organization. The Sports Club meeting was conducted by Vice President Theodore Bores because President Oscar Federau went to a clam bake. Every one is pitching in to put over the card party for the Bubonic Family. Our girls are going to bake cakes and donate it to the party, the men will go out and get plenty of door prizes. We will give you a run down about the party next month, but we have heard that Tony Pinter has sold oxer 150 tickets for the party. John J. Hrico, Mortician has bought and will remodel a building on Buckeye and East 125-126 into a mortuary. We have high hopes for Judge August Pryatel on Election Day Tuesday, November 5th, 1957. I have no doubt in my mind about him winning but, I would like to see him roll up a record vote thereby giving him that feeling that the people of Cleveland want him, and I am sure he will dispense justice, with intelligence, broadmindedness, and with the great humane strain towards his fellow men, that he is endowed with. Let’s give this fine man the support he deserves, and he Will reciprocate by giving outstanding public service. He has been in the prosecutors office, assistant sup’t of insurance for the State of Ohio, and then was elevated to sup’t, where he has made aft enviable record. He is now serving his first year as a judge, and he is thought of highly by his associates, lawyers, and all the major newspapers in Cleveland. St. Elizabeth’s grape festival on Sep’t 1st had a large parade, picture taking of the group, car raffle, and crowd of about one thousand people. We went to a dinner which was held in the country. The day was ideal sunshine with a light breeze, and ait six o’clock P. M. 100 people sat down to eat, under the open skies, surely it was a day to remember. — Everyone was congenial, not a care in the world. — Hungarian Goulash was served, and we noticed everyone had at least two helpings, including myself. It must have been the air out in the country that gave everyone a good appetite, we enjoyed ourselves. We like September for several reasons, the beginning of fall, and the end of Daylight saving time, in Cleveland and Vicinity. We heard that Joseph Szalav, master barber and former official of the Association may buy a farm. A speedy recovery to ‘Albert Jozik, — Don’t lay around the Hospital — Al. Ted Beres and Frank O’Ravis are bowling on Friday nights with a team called the “Misers”. We hope that the name will have no bearing on their sportsmenship. Congratulations to Br. 45-V upon their 50 year anniversary, which will be celebrated on October 20th, 1957 With the traditional banquet, speeches, etc. Each and every voter should look over the bond issue’s tax levies and other gimmicks to increase your property tax. Your first consideration should be your own pccketbok. If, the money isn’t there nobody can spend it? Mary K. Sotak, councilwoman 29th Ward member of Br. 361-V looks like a winner in the primary Tuesday October 1st. Jack P. Russell councilman 16th Ward, another William Penn Member will win also in the primaries. Mayor Anthony Celebrezze of Cleveland, Br. 14-V member, has all newspaper endorsements and he can’t lose. Julius J Petrash State Senator, who is in the race for city clerk of the city of Cleveland has an excellent chance of winning. Frank R. Pokorny, Jr. state representative, is an expert on workmen’s compensation and is now practicing before that body on behalf of many clients of his. If any William Penn member has any problems pertaining to compensation cousult with Frank and we are sure he can help, he is located at 11906 Buckeye Rd., Cleveland, Ohio. With bowling season in full swing, we, sincerely hope and wish that everyone has a “200 average or better” by the time the deadline rolls around for the annual bowling tournament. Ex Animo Joseph J.
