PAGE 14 November 21, 1956. William \ WILLIAM PENN WATCHTOWER f By JOSEPH J. HORVATH — Cleveland, Ohio It is with great reluctance that we drop the name “Verhovay” from our column, but progress is in the air and we are going along with the trend of the times. Branch 14-V Meeting Sunday October 7, 1956, and December Meeting. It was a dignified, quite gathering of our members A card party will be held about the second Sunday in December. There will be a short proigram. A playet, directed by Julius Cincar, will be offered in conjunction with the card party This could be the nucleus of a William Penn Playhouse here in Cleveland. English and Hungarian plays could be shown every month. Incidentally, Bert Szilagyi donated the door prize for the meeting, which was a case of wine. Sigismund Kadar has found himself a new home on Ridge Road, southwest; of Cleveland. Wedding bells again for “Kadar”... We saw Nick Brinsky at Hotel Cleveland, promoting a candidate for prosecuting attorney ... A1 Boros and Mike Lucas, partners and brothers-in-law, will move their place of business from 319th and Buckeye to 2975 East 116th Street, reported by Mrs. Margaret Lucas ... Joseph Szalma, barber next to the Colony Bowling Alleys, is carrying on a feud with some doctor across the street — all over a bag of peanuts — Joe being a member of Branch 43-R ... Joseph Krupansky, superintendent of the workhouse, tired of his single status, so on September 29th took unto himself a wife at the First Hungarian Reformed Church. Joe was a widower. Good luck and happiness__ Louis Városi bowled a 300 game several years ago in the city tournament here in Cleveland. Since then he has been trying to duplicate that feat, but so far success has eluded him ... Mrs. Mary Kamya yearns to go back to Hot Spring, Arkansas where, she asserts, the water did her much good. We saw many William Penn members at the 25th anniversary banquet of the “Öreg Amerikások,” among them Joseph Nemes of Youngstown, Ohio, also a Mr. Szabó of that city; Frank J. Pokorny, Sr., Mayor Anthony Celebrezze of Cleveland, Jack P. Russell, president of council; Joseph Szalay, James Kovach, Leslie J. Dus, District Manager Louis F. Kostley, manager of Branch 14-V, Mr. Boda, Elsie K. Fodor, Judge Julius Kovachy, August Bessenyey, police prosecutor; Mike Gyurko. Coloman- Kolozsvary, president of the society, was delighted to see the crowd that turned out for the affair, while Mrs. Kolozsvary was busy in the kitchen. It was a grand gathering. Andrew Dono, president of the United Hungarian societies, was excellent as the master of ceremonies. Wo saw Mr. Magyary, District Manager Coloman Bertalan, manager of Branch 45-V, Emery Készéi, Joseph Drotos and his missus, Joseph Barry, Andrew Stefan and his wife, Mr. Balogh, and others at the Branch 45-V card party held on Sunday, October 28, 1956. There was another card party held on October 28th, this one by Branch 361-V at the William Penn hall on Buckeye Road. Mrs. E. Gall, manager of Branch 361-V ,was celebrating her birthday. Many happy returns, Mrs. Gall. I was introduced to this assemblage of about 200 people, for which I am grateful. Members of other branches were present. District Manager Louis F. Kostley of Branch 14-V was seen passing out pencils at the party. Election of officers at Branch 14-V will be held the FIRST SUNDAY IN DECEMBER. We do hope the new officers will consider moving the office downstairs, so that our elderly members will not have to continue to risk their limbs on those concrete stairs. The hub of activity should be“ on the main floor. Let’s agree on this now. Mrs. Helen O’Ravis, who works at the elections, saves her earnings to spend on her children for Christmas. Ah, mother love. Cal Karnya is considering running for some political office. We usually meet the deadline for1 this column a few days before the date designated, so that this column will not contain any information on my political outcome. It will appear in the December WILLLIAM PENN. Ex animo, JOSEPH J. HORVATH c. o. William Penn Home 8637 Buckeye Road Cleveland 4, Ohio EXTENDED — AUGUST 1956 14. V. Total 82 Penn I News From Northwestern Ohio j BRANCH 27-V TOLEDO, OHIO 1 By Stephen J. Ivaneso The Mixed League at Johnny Rihacek’s Lido Lanes is in full swing. The scores up until now are secondary — a good laugh, with a lot of fun coming first! The league had its election of officers: “Lefty” Bill Curry elected president; John Rakay is the vice president; Hazel Vischer (with all the averages) is Secretary; and Rip Tinta (with all the money) is treasurer. John Lesinszki is sergeant at1 arms. The A.B.C. rules apply on handicap basis. Paul Lajti, Sr. and team are dark horses. They won three games and didn’t even need a handicap. Helen Smith is giving hubby Bill a run for his money, so, naturally, Bill’s bowling is improving. Sue Belegrin shot only one gutterball the last night out. Jack Walters, with the backing of wife Doris, is making it tough on the Lees and Weintraub combine by taking 2 out of 3. Gary Vischer subbed for his mother Hazel, doing a grand job! Mrs. Donath got her first double. Louis Csengeri, husband Steve and Jack Hager were in the 400 group — not enough strikes. The two Junga sisters, Mary and Margaret, along with Margaret Hornyak and Theresa Ignác , are the luckiest foursome in the league. Their handicap last week was 150 pins per game. Here are some scores from the hot-shots — Frank Piiskas, 687 at the Elm Recreation; Rip Tinta and Julius Feyes, 659 and 651 respectively, at Hagerty’s Bowling Center; A1 Imre, 668 at the Playdium; Dick Sendi, coming to his own with a big 714 set; Brother John Ivaneso had a big 680 total, at the Marathon Alleys! Congratulations to Bob Nickel and Verdis Stephens! They are our City Champs. Bob averaged 214 during the round robin eliminations. Their next stop is Chicago for the finals. Ernest Taylor — in Chicago — please note! Ernie is one of Bob’s rooters in the Windy City. October 5 was a memorable day for Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Potoczki of Bakewell Street. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary with a family gathering. Their children, Joseph Potoczki and Mrs. Emery Fabos, and their families, attended the happy occasion. Mrs. Fabos is the proprietor of the Sylvia Ann Shop. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Nagy of Steel Street celebrated 44 years of wedlock. Congratulations to each happy couple. Some of Branch 27-V’s members that are in stitches (this is no laughing matter either): Andy Rasi cut his right hand while at work and willl be out of the bowling lineup for at least six weeks ... Louis “Hank” Hornyak tried to avert hitting a boy on a bicycle and for his effort sideswiped a moving train. No one was hurt, but his car needed complete overhauling ... Andrew Feyes, who received facial burns, is getting along fine ... James Vischer has 2 stitches above his left eye, getting this for looking the wrong way when he parked his car... Speedy recovery, all. As the cold season approaches, Ernest (I’m-on-a-diet) Belegrin, located at Front and Consaul, is ready to winterize your car for that much needed protection. For the people on the south end of town: Stop at Sherm Conrad’s Sohio Station, South Broadway and Summit. Both these members of Branch 27-V give excellent service. Our deepest sympathy to the Verbosky family of Rossford, Ohio, in the passing of their father and husband. Mr. Stephen Verbosky was a long fraternal member of the Rossford branch and of Branch 27-V., Thanksgiving is gone. Were you sincerely thankful for God’s bountiful blessing on you, and did you care enough to pray for the Hungarians fighting and dying for their freedom — your freedom too! Be generous to aid drives on behalf of Hungary. Christmas will soon be here. Shop to your heart’s content — but do save a little for the embattled Hungarians!!! LAPSED — AUGUST 1956 5. R.
