May the new year hold much hope, happiness and good health for us all. I hope all of you had a very Merry Christmas and was blessed to spend some time with family and friends. Our branch Christmas party was held on Nov. 20 in conjunction with Branches 34 and 71. Once again, good food and fellowship was enjoyed by all. Santa made his annual appearance and was once again the hit of the party. Thank you to the WPA Home Office for supplying the gift items for the children and for its generous financial support. It is through the support of WPA that we can offer this wonderful fraternal event for our members. We requested that attendees bring nonperishable food items to be distributed to a food bank. Many thanks to all those who brought food donations to the party. Such a small gesture can mean so much to so many. Recently, a clothing drive was held here at the WPA Home Office to support a small ministry in eastern Pennsylvania called Tammy's Closet. Gently used clothing was donated by Home Office employees and some of their friends and family members. WPA members Sara, Lilly, James and Julia Barra volunteer at the "Closet" and help sort and display donations. All clothing is given away free to those in need. A big "thank you" to all who graciously spent time going through their closets and donating their unwanted, but still usable, clothing items. Please remember to report any community volunteer work you perform so that we can share it here in William Penn Life. Happy birthday to all those celebrating a birthday this month. May you be blessed with many more, and may all of them be healthy. Remember those feeling under the weather. Maybe you can help make their day a little bit better by offering to take them to a doctor's appointment or make a trip to the grocery store for them. If you have any news to share or have any insurance questions, please contact me at 412-932-3170 or by email at dmckinsey@hotnmil.com. WPA offers some of the most competitive insurance plans and premiums in the industry. We have special plans for people of all ages, young and old. Branch 800 Altoona, PA by Joan B. Ballash Since last month, we have seen winter officially arrive. Many people saw snow flurries for the first time this season. It was a signal to get out the heavy coats, hats and gloves. Is your vehicle ready for cold and freezing temperatures? Perhaps it's time for a tune up. The weather outside did not have a negative influence on Branch 800's Christmas party held Dec. 4 at the Altoona Hampton Inn. Members were attired in festive clothing, which added to the gala. We enjoyed a tasty meal of chicken, pasta with meatballs, haluski, baked beans, fruit salad, potato salad, macaroni salad, rolls, cupcakes, juice and coffee. There was plenty of food and time to relax and socialize with members and guests. Dennis and Dan Greiner hosted the event, and branch member Paul Lasher played the accordion, including Hungarian carols. Victor Ballash led the group in singing. Santa Claus and one of his elves appeared with gifts and posed for photos. We send special greetings to Olive Savino who is 95 years of age and enjoying every moment. We owe a debt of gratitude to the Home Office for its assistance in making our Christmas party so successful. Branch 800 participated in the WPA Holiday Baskets Program. Thank you to the Home Office for enhancing and encouraging our efforts to assist needy individuals. Altoona's Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders defeated the Clairton Bears Dec. 9 in Hershey to win their third straight PIAA Class A Championship. The win extended the Marauders winning streak to 46 games. Congratulations also to Penn State for a winning team! Happy birthday wishes to all who were January babies and best wishes to other members celebrating special occasions this month. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, Jan. 16. Take advantage of this three-day weekend to visit friends or relatives you haven't seen for a while. Next month, we'll report on the results of the branch election and introduce readers to those who hold office. Meetings are held the second Monday of the month.
