We're looking forward to this year's WPA Picnic on Aug. 26 in Hiram, Ohio. The WPA Magyar Folk Dancers are looking for more dancers to join us. We help the younger generation learn the Hungarian language and culture through dancing and singing. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact us! Please call the number above with news you want to share here. Branch 249 Dayton, OH by Mark Schmidt We are smack dab in the middle of summer for you readers with kids. One month gone, one we are in and another to go before school starts. Gas up the car, we need to hit the road, but be safe! Congratulations to all the graduates. May your dreams come true in the next stage of your life. Whatever your next stage is, whether more education or the working world, please remember that you have a fraternal family here at WPA. Branch 249 joined members of the Magyar Club of Dayton June 27 to bake pastries and cookies for both the WPA Picnic and a local event supporting the police in Old North Dayton, a traditionally Hungarian part of town. Another baking event may be planned for July. Please call us for more info if interested. Another joint activity Branch 249 participated in was Join Hands Day. WPA, along with members of the Magyar Club of Dayton and Queen of Martyrs Church, weeded, planted 250 flowers and mulched the flower beds in front of the church. Both Branch 249 and the Magyar Club hold activities at McAuley Hall at the church. In appreciation, Branch 249 supplied the flowers, mulch, donuts and coffee for the event which was accomplished in two hours by the eager volunteers. July brings the commemoration of the start of two great countries. For any Canadian readers, July 1 is Canada Day. And, of course, July 4 is Independence Day for the USA. It seems fitting that these two countries have close birthdays since we share the longest unguarded border in the world and share many customs and habits. May both countries continue to prosper and flourish. Speaking of July and flourishing, we're looking forward to the 34th Annual WPA Golf Tournament. If I had to make a living at golf, I'd have starved a long time ago. No, to me the weekend is a time to be with my family, both actual and fraternal. The memories you make with both families are priceless. That's why I torture myself on the golf course. And who knows, I only need one lucky shot to win $15,000. August has two great events for a Hungarian style stay-cation: the Birmingham Festival in Toledo Aug. 19 and 20; and the WPA Picnic in Hiram, Ohio Aug. 26.
