Branch News Members and friends of Branch 249 enjoy watching a Dayton Dragons minor league baseball game from their special box seats during Hungarian Day at 513 Field. Coyne; and Gerry Nelson. Sending a smile to Branch 226 member Sally Petras, former branch auditor. Here's some good news from our neck of the woods. Member Shelby Harris and Kathryn Makay, both William Penn Association Magyar Folk Dancers, have earned spots in the prestigious National Honor Society at their respective high schools in the McKeesport area. Branch members can attend our next meeting on the third Wednesday of June at 10:00 a.m. at Branch President Malvene Heyz's home. Please call 412-751-1898 to RSVP for this specific meeting. We're looking forward to a day trip out to Blairsville, Pa., for what will certainly be another great WPA golf tournament! The Hungarian dance group is preparing for another summer season of performances around Pittsburgh. Please contact us if you know someone who is interested in joining this group. Please call the phone number above with news you want to share here. Branch 249 Dayton, OH by Mark Schmidt It is with great sadness I report the passing of our Branch President Michele Daley-LaFlame, April 27. Michele was instrumental in keeping all things Hungarian active in the Dayton region for many years. She was also the president of the Magyar Club of Dayton and was actively trying to open a local museum highlighting the three waves of Hungarian immigration to Dayton (old West Dayton, North Dayton and the '56ers) and their communities and achievements. She will be greatly missed by all of the Dayton Hungarian community and her family. I also have to report the passing of longtime member Dottie (Molnár) Hofele. We fondly remember seeing her at many local activities. May both Michele and Dottie rest in peace. We had many local activities during April and May. The last weekend of April was the WPA bowling Tournament in Washington, Pa. The Dayton teams bowled well and won several team and individual events. After the bowling awards luncheon and banquet, we hustled back to Dayton for the Magyar Club of Dayton's Spring Dinner Dance. The food was fantastic, the music of George Bátyi and the Gypsy Strings with Alex Udvary on cimbalom was beautiful and the place was sold out. All had a wonderful time. The next day, Branch 249 held its annual Hungarian Day at 5/3 Field with the Dayton Dragons professional baseball team. The Dragons won, and we all enjoyed the food and got to make some new fraternal friends. Maybe next year we can rent the largest party deck. We were also looking forward to watching the Dayton Festival Club Dancers perform several times on the stages of the World A'Fair at the Dayton Convention Center May 19 to 21. Over 30 countries were scheduled to share their food, dress and customs with the many visitors. Many WPA members were to help at the Festival Club booth selling cabbage rolls, kolbász and delicious pastries. As a special treat, the Tamburitzans of Duquesne University were to perform multiple times on Saturday. Check them out on their summer tour. Make sure to fly the flag especially high on Flag Day, June 14. Good luck to all the recent graduates. Whether you go on to higher education, the military or directly to the work force, remember that members of WPA are here for you. Don't forget Father's Day on June 18. Best of all is June 21 when summer officially arrives! Our next branch meeting is Saturday, June 24, at 1:00 p.m. at McAuley Hall at Queen of Martyrs Church, 4134 Cedar Ridge Road, Dayton. We will vote to fill recent officer vacancies. Please let me know if you have any questions on the vacancies and if you are interested in running. Get well wishes go to those ill or hospitalized; Frank and Pearl Murin, Jesse Stefanies at the Dayton VA, Elizabeth Daley-Hewitt and Don Dugan. Please remember them in your prayers. We extend our sympathy to those who have lost a loved one, especially to Branch 249 Vice President Steve LaFlame and the Molnár family. May fond memories ease your sorrow.
