Thanks so much to the Home Office for providing financial support and gift items to our branches and helping us host successful, fun-filled family Christmas parties. A very cold but dry day allowed safe travels for guests attending our branch party. Those attending were entertained by the Aut Mori Clowns (featuring WPA member Mike "Boo- Boo" Dankovich). This organization raises funds with their performances to financially assist children with medical needs. A lunch was served, followed by raffles. Each child received a free raffle ticket with the chance of winning one of 20 prizes. For the adults, a split-the-pot raffle was held and won by Elaine Heilman and Irene Nemeth. Winners of our annual holiday scholarship raffle were: first prize ($100) - Dora McKinsey; second prize ($75) - Brandon Palomaki; third prize ($50) - Barbara House; fourth prize ($25) - Dora McKinsey; and fifth prize ($25) - Joyce Nicholson. Five other donated items were given as additional prizes. After the raffles, we sang Christmas carols. As we sang "Jingle Bells," Santa (Matt Lewis) and Mrs. Claus (Amanda Ference) arrived. The group photo was taken by Frank Schauer. Then, Santa and Mrs. Claus chatted with each child and gave each a goodie bag, gift card and a monetary gift. We thank the party committee and members who helped make this year's branch party another successful event. Leftover gift items were donated to Youngstown-Akron Children's Hospital. In accordance with the WPA By-Laws, 2016 was an election year for Branch 28 officers. The officers elected during our November meeting and who will serve for the next two years are: Steve Novak, president; Frank Schauer, vice president; Kathy Novak, secretary-treasurer; and Maria Schauer, Mickey Schauer and Leslie Polgar, auditors. Congratulations to retired Vice Chair of the Board Nick Kotik on being honored by the Pennsylvania Fraternal Alliance as the 2016 recipient of the John Jordan Upchurch Award. What a wonderful day it was Dec. 4 when the University of Pittsburgh hosted the annual Nationality Rooms holiday open house. The Hungarian Room once again hosted a pastry shop. The sweet treats were very popular. It's always so nice meeting so many people at these events. Best wishes to all those celebrating a birthday or anniversary this month. Get well wishes go to all those not feeling up to par, especially Mary Lou Tokár and Jeff Toth. We extend our sincere sympathy to those who have recently lost a loved one. Branch 34 Pittsburgh, PA by Marguerite McNelis Happy and healthy New Year to everyone! We hope you had a blessed Christmas surrounded by loved ones. Please take a moment and pray for all our service men and women, especially those in harm's way. Our grandson, Donovan McNelis, in his first season as starting right guard, is celebrating his team winning the Great Midwestern Conference Championship. Alderson Broaddus University had a record setting 9-2 season. Donovan started every game this season. He is also working toward both his bachelor's in nursing and his physician's assistant degree. His mother, Valerie McNelis, is both a proud mom and a WPA member. Our annual family Christmas party with Branch 352 and Branch 71 was held on Nov. 20 at the Sports Haven Bowl in Bridgeville, Pa. There was some snow on the ground, but the roads were fine. Everyone who attended enjoyed the bowling, food, prizes and especially the WILLIAM PENN LIFE ° January 2017 0 17
