Branch News Branch 132 South Bend, IN by the Branch Officers It's been a snowy and cold January. Hope everyone survived our Midwest weather. For Christmas, one of our officers received a book called "Culinaria Hungary" by Anikó Gergely. Anyone with a Hungarian background would enjoy it. It includes step-bystep instructions with pictures for making lard, cracklings, sausage (with rice and pork), pogácsa, Dobos torta, sauerkraut and many other dishes. The book brings back memories of years ago. On Sunday, Dec. 8, our branch held its annual children's Christmas party. Twenty children and 30 adults attended. The children received gift cards and candy. Pizza and soft drinks were served to all. We hope to see even more members at our next party. All are welcome. Our next meeting will be held March 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Martin's Cafe on Ireland Road. On March 6, we will celebrate our fifth year of reorganization. Thanks to all who help keep our branch active. Our condolences to the families of Freda Hornyak-Laiber and William Ross. May they rest in peace. Branch 189 Alliance, OH by Sherry Moore Hope everyone had a great Christmas. Now that the holidays are over, we can look forward to spring. We had a great Christmas party. Santa (Steve Bayler) arrived at the party in a sleigh pulled by two beautiful horses. The sleigh's owners travel from Cleveland every year to do this for us, and all the children love it. Sixty children and their parents attended the party. Barb booked a group of clowns who kept the kids entertained until Santa arrived. Everyone enjoyed food and cookies, and Santa had a gift for each child. Tracy brought baskets to hold food donations, which were taken after the party to the local women's shelter. She also put up a tree decorated with the names of 26 children in need. Our members each take a name and buy the child a gift. We had a great year with lots of parties, including a Thanksgiving dinner. The steak and fish fries are doing great. Everyone seems to like them. We're looking forward to another good year. Margie is still not feeling well. If you get the chance, send her a card. I'd like to thank everyone who helped us out last year. Without a lot of people helping, we would not get things done. Until next time, stay happy and healthy and take time to share a smile with someone. Branch 226 McKeesport, PA by Judit Borsay Happy birthday and happy anniversary to all our members celebrating their special day in February. Happy belated birthday wishes go to longtime member Julia Genes, who turned 98 in January. By the time this is printed, we'll have held our January meeting, but all members are welcome to join us at the next meeting on Feb. 18 at 6:00 p.m. at Malvene's home. Please call 412-751-1898 for directions. Stay warm and stay safe. Please check on your elderly family members and neighbors. Do you have news you'd like to share here? Please call. We won't know your news until you tell us. I'll leave you with this encouraging note: The pain you feel today is the strength you feel tomorrow. For every challenge encountered, there is opportunity for growth. Keep up the good work. Branch 249 Dayton, OH by Mark Schmidt The cold weather is here, and I fear we are in for a long winter. Brutal temperatures and heavy snows make it difficult to get to fraternal activities, but we try not to miss any. Thank goodness the branch Christmas party was held before the really nasty weather. Fifty people attended, with 20 children making crafts and waiting for St. Nicholas to come. And arrive he did to a rousing chorus of "Jingle Bells." The kids all waited patiently for their turn with St. Nick. He listened to their wish lists and gave each a goody bag supplied by the Home Office and other gifts from our local branch. The food was good, as usual, and we all had a great time with old and new friends. We are busy preparing the year end reports from our branch for the Home Office. To show how active 24 ° February 2014 ° William Penn Life Santa Claus arrives by horse-drawn sleigh to the annual family Christmas party hosted by Branch 189.
