Branch News Branch 14 member Olivia Krasznai (above) enjoys having her face painted by Joy the Clown during the branch’s Christmas party, white fellow member Andrew Miklus (below) shows Santa want he wants for Christmas The Nationality Rooms at the University of Pittsburgh hosted their annual holiday open house Dec. 8 in the University's Cathedral of Learning. The beautiful Hungarian Room was open for visitors. Kati Csornán and her many helpers sold Hungarian pastries in the Budapest Café, with the proceeds going to help support the Hungarian Room. If you haven't attended an open house at the university, you must try to go next year. On Nov. 30, the Cleveland Hungarian Congress (Magyar Kongresszus) held its annual Magyar Bál, and we were pleased to have two WPA members honored. Endre Csornán, WPA National Vice President- Fraternal, and Branch 14 member Mary Jane Molnár, president of the Hungarian Cultural Center of Northeastern Ohio, were presented the Árpád Szövetség Medal for their work in the Hungarian community. The beautiful award and certificate were presented during the black tie dinner dance. Please see page 5 of this issue for the schedule of WPA events for the coming year. Be sure to check upcoming issues for updates and registration dates for all activities. Congratulations to Branch 14 member Halle M. Üveges who won third prize among new students in the WPFA Scholarship Foundation 2013-2014 Essay Awards, which included a $200 grant. Congratulations also to branch member Endre Szentkirályi on earning his doctorate degree in literature in 2013. He received his degree from the University of Debrecen (Hungary) where he completed his research and published "Hungarians in Cleveland 1951-2011: Then and Now." Dr. Szentkirályi teaches English and contemporary literature at Nordonia High School. He also is continuing his research and plans to publish two more books, one by Zrinyi publishing (official publisher of Hungary's Ministry of Defense) and one by Helena History Press. We would like to extend our sympathy to those WPA members who have recently lost a loved one. Get well wishes go to all members who might be feeling under the weather, especially the Rev. Peter Toth, Arlene Csornán and Joan Parete. We also send get well wishes to former National President E. E. (Al) Vargo as he continues to get stronger each and every day. Please keep all of our members in your prayers so that they can soon join us in our WPA activities. Special happy birthday wishes go to Branch 14 member Ernest Sarosi, who is celebrating his 90th birthday on Jan. 18. Belated birthday wishes go to Violet Sarosi, who celebrated her 88th birthday on Dec. 20. Happy birthday and happy anniversary wishes go to all of our branch members and Home Office staff who are celebrating a special day in January or February. Unfortunately, winter is now upon us on the North Coast, so our next Branch 14 meeting won't take place until Wednesday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. at The First Hungarian Reformed Church, 14530 Alexander Road, Walton Hills. Adult Branch 14 members are encouraged to attend. Branch 14 members having news to share about themselves or family members can reach me at RichSaro@ att.net or at 440-248-9012. Branch 18 Lincoln Park, MI by Barbara A. House Happy New Year 2014! Can you believe it? I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. Now, think spring. Spring brings the WPA Bowling Tournament in May. Get your teams together and join us. You know you will have a wonderful time. Branch 18 takes a break all winter from our meetings. We wouldn't want you to come out in dangerous weather. You have plenty of time to plan on attending our next meeting April 23. Remember, we meet at the Hungarian Cultural Center on Goddard Road in Taylor at 7:00 p.m. We hope to see you there. Don't forget to bring your animal food donations. November's Charity-of-the- Month was won by me. I, of course, chose Brownstown Animal Shelter. We dropped off all your wonderful donations from our Christmas party at the Brownstown shelter. They were thrilled. They also asked for blankets and towels. Some animals were lying on the concrete. We went home and cleaned out our linen closet. Our closet sure looks a lot nicer, and some animals are a lot warmer and more comfortable. Just a suggestion. Speaking of our Christmas party....Wow! How do we thank all of you wonderful members? It flowed perfectly because of all your help. Thank you, Santa (George): you were wonderful, as always. Hope William Penn Life 0 January 2014 0 21
