May every day of the new year glow with happiness and good cheer for you and your loved ones. We accomplished so much in 2013. We will plan to grow more and continue to do more in 2014, having more fun and accomplishing more good WPA deeds with our local branches throughout this year. Once again, our branches participated in the WPA Holiday Basket program. Branch volunteer Harry Nicholson delivered the food baskets in early December. Harry delivered baskets to individual families and to the Jefferson County chapter of the Red Cross. Paul Brandt, executive assistant to the chapter, identified four families who had recent fires and were in need of just about everything. He said this time of year, fires were abundant due to holiday lights, increased fireplace usage and over-taxed heating systems. Everyone expressed gratitude for WPA's generosity. For information about our branch activities, please call Joyce Nicholson at 740-264-6238. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH by Richard E. Sarosi Happy New Year and best wishes for a great 2014. We congratulate Jerry Hauser on his election as National Vice President-Secretary. We wish him well as he joins our WPA family. As 2013 came to an end, many activities took place in the Hungarian community in Cleveland. Many Branch 14 members are involved with the Hungarian Scouts of Greater Cleveland, who celebrated their 40th anniversary Nov. 16. A music and dance program was performed by the Clevelandi Magyar Cserkész Regös Csoport. What a beautiful night it was in Cleveland. The dances, music, costumes and energy was truly Hungarian. The Branch 14 Christmas party was held Nov. 23. We held the party early in order to lessen the hectic pace of preparing for the Christmas holiday. The menu included chicken nuggets, french fries, pizza, ice cream, cookies and tropical smoothies. Flower Clown performed balloon sculpting, creating flowers, a flying reindeer, a bow and arrow, a rocking horse, an octopus, dolls, a teddy bear and other shapes. Meanwhile, Joy the Clown painted children's faces and arms as her assistant made balloon shapes, too. Santa Claus arrived and met with the young members. Andrew Miklus of Newberry, Ohio, came prepared with his toy catalogue and showed Santa everything that he would like for Christmas. I sure hope that Santa kept good notes. The winter storm that we experienced helped Santa to move onto his next stop. A special "thank you" goes to all of the Branch 14 members and helpers who were there to set up, decorate, prepare, serve the lunch and clean up. The food donations that we received during the party were taken to the Maple Heights Food Bank. Please remember your local food banks and donate canned goods, non-perishable items and personal care items. Hunger is a problem in our communities throughout the year, not just during the holidays. Please remember those who are less fortunate and those who are experiencing hard times. The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble performed at Cleveland's State Theatre Nov. 21. What a night! We had a chance to see Hungary's best dancers and musicians perform live and share with us our Hungarian culture. We even had a chance to see two dances from the Székely area of Transylvania, which we visited in September on the WPA trip. 20 0 January 2014 0 William Penn Life
