Branch News Participating in the May 18 Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community were Branch 26 members (l-r) Gerry Davenport, Barbara Tew, Connor Ross and Dominique Ross. Happy Summer! We hope that while everyone enjoys the fireworks on the 4th of July, we take time to give thanks for the real reason for this celebration: independence and freedom. Hats off to Endre Csornán, Dora McKinsey and all those who prepared and volunteered at the Tri-State Picnic. The weather was perfect: a little breezy, but dry. As always, the food was great, and there were more than enough treats to pick from. A traditional WPA affair-good food and good times with friends. The fire pit was busy as at any Hungarian picnic. Thanks, again, WPA for providing this wonderful day for us. Happy retirement to Jackie Prologo. She has been a dedicated teacher in the Youngstown Catholic School system and has decided she wants to spend her "golden years" with her family. As a treat, Jackie and her husband Frank will be traveling to Switzerland in July to visit their son and daughter-in-law. Graduation wishes go to all our graduating members. We especially commend Caitlin Tarcy, who was chosen to be one of two featured speakers at the spring commencement of Youngstown State University. Caitlin graduated this spring from YSU with a doctorate in physical therapy. She graduated magna cum laude from YSU in 2010 with a bachelor of science in biology. During the summer of 2011, Caitlin traveled with other students to Haiti to volunteer as a medical aid. Best wishes to Caitlin in all her future endeavors. She is another successful WPA scholarship recipient. Also receiving special honors this spring were high school graduates and cousins Alyssa and Jeremiah Schauer. Alyssa graduated form Columbiana (Ohio) High School and received the A1 Ridel Memorial Scholarship, as well as numerous academic and sports awards. She has completed her first year of college studies after taking advantage of a pre-college program during her senior year. She will continue her college education at Kent State University with the hopes of becoming an elementary school teacher. Jeremiah graduated from LaBelle (Fla.) High School, receiving a band leadership award. He was an officer of the National Honor Society and was a member of the Key Club. He plans to study computer analysis and programming at Edison State College in Fort Myers, Fla. Jerry also recently became an Eagle Scout. As an added treat, his sister Rachel is home this summer while on break from her university studies in Germany. What a great evening of fraternalism was shared by all attending the Lake County Captains baseball game June 8. WPA was one of the main sponsors for Hungarian Heritage Night at the ballpark. The Hungarian national anthem was sung as WPA members joined other area Hungarians in opening a huge Hungarian flag on the field. Hungarian food was available at the concession area. WPA sponsored a display which allowed everyone attending the game a chance to learn more about our wonderful Association. Assisting with the display area were National Vice President-Fraternal Endre Csornán, National Directors Richard Sarosi and Kathy Novak and Branch 14 President Caroline Lanzara. I also had a great time during my first visit to the New Brunswick Branch 34 Pittsburgh, PA by Marguerite McNelis Hope that everyone has a good 4th of July. We're looking forward to seeing everyone at the golf tournament. Please take a moment and pray for all our service men and women, especially those in harm's way. Branch 34 would like to welcome our newest member, Rhiannon Healy! Congratulations to Donovan McNelis and Gábriellé Kelley for a great school year. Way to go! Happy and healthy birthday wishes go out to everyone celebrating their birthdays in July, especially Andy and Donovan. Toth-Maskarinec Branch 89 hopes everyone is enjoying nice, sunny weather. We all know what the sunny weather leads to—the start of golf season. More on that later. Our branch was busy the past month. Branch 89, in conjunction with Munhall Boy Scout Troop #15, conducted a Join Hands Day project on May 11 at the Homestead Cemetery. It was great to see the officers and some members, along with the Boy Scouts, working together to brighten the final resting place of so many people. It's almost here: Saturday, Aug. 17—the Second Annual Branch 89 Golf Outing and Dinner. In keeping with the attitude of fraternalism and giving back to the community, all proceeds from this outing will ben-William Penn Life 0 July 2013 0 19
