Branch News Members enjoy an old-fashioned szalonna sütés (bacon roast) June 2 during a picnic sponsored jointly by WPA Branches 10, 40, 248, 349 and 8164 and the Ohio Valley Hungarian- American Cultural Society held at Warren Township Park in Yorkville, Ohio. Branch 10 Barton, OH Branch 40 Martins Ferry, OH Branch 248 Monaville, WV Branch 349 Weirton, WV Branch 8164 Steubenville, OH by Joyce Nicholson Hello from the WPA branches in Barton, Martins Ferry, Weirton, Steubenville and Monaville! Our branches participated in an outing March 30 to a Wheeling Nailers hockey game. Unfortunately, the Nailers brought the 2012-13 season to a close when they lost to the Trenton Titans at WesBanco Arena. The Titans spoiled the season-ending party, erasing a 3-1 deficit, in picking up a 4-3 win in the season finale. The small group that attended had a fun time together even though the Nailers lost. In May, our Join Hands Day project was to continue our upkeep of Jim Donaldson Park in Wintersville. The weather was cold, and those who helped mulch, plant flowers and weed enjoyed an impromptu pizza party at Pizza Hut afterwards to warm up and fill up. Our thanks to all who helped. There was great weather on June 2 for a picnic hosted jointly by our WPA branches and the Ohio Valley Hungarian Club at Warren Township Park in Yorkville, Ohio. There was a good crowd of hungry folks who participated in consuming the delicious food. We all enjoyed the bacon roast, music and good fellowship all afternoon. We hope to see you at the 30th Annual WPA Golf Tournament & Scholarship Days at Quicksilver Golf Club July 19 and 20. We want to wish a happy anniversary to Irene and Gabe Rosza, who celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on June 5. We also extend best wishes to all other members celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. For information about branch activities, please call Joyce Nicholson at 740-264-6238. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH by Richard E. Sarosi While we enjoyed the beautiful, warm weather that came this June, we took time to honor the men and women of our military services by proudly flying the red, white and blue on Flag Day, June 14. We'll raise the Flag again on Independence Day, July 4, to thank you for your service and sacrifice to the Unites States of America. As I look back, May was a busy time at WPA. On May 15, WPA hosted a Hungarian barbeque for the Calvin Synod Conference at Scenic View. Endre Csoman's famous Chicken Paprikás with Nokedli, smoked kolbász and Abált Szalonna were on the menu for the Hungarian barbeque. Krémes was served as dessert and was a big hit. On May 16, we attended the Calvin Synod banquet at the Bethlen Communities in Ligonier. The new living units are beautiful; some have great views of the Ligonier Valley. On May 18, the Tri-State Picnic took place at Scenic View and was attended by members of WPA branches in Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio and West Virginia. This was a great way to meet and greet friends and catch up on news since our last get together. We had a wonderful selection of dinner and dessert dishes that were brought and shared with everyone. The weather greatly improved, and we had a warm day, even though the beginning of that week recorded some of the coldest May temperatures in years! In our next issue, I will report on the Hungarian Heritage Night at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio with the Lake Erie Captains which took place on Saturday, June 8. Many fraternal activities will take place during this summer for our members to enjoy:- The WPA golf tournament, July 19 and 20, at Quicksilver Golf Club in Midway, Pa.- The 75th anniversary of the Hungarian Cultural Garden of Cleveland will be celebrated on Saturday, July 20. All Hungarians and friends are invited to the ceremony, which will begin at 2:30 p.m. Current generations of Hungarians will have the opportunity to be a part of 14 0 July 2013 0 William Penn Life
