Rakoczy-Przywara I have been experiencing numerous problems with my computer recently. Unfortunately, because of these problems, several articles that 1 submitted via email for publication in William Penn Life were never received by the Home Office and, thus, not published. Here is some of what you missed.... My, oh, my how times have changed. Did you know the following Windber historical facts? • August 1909 Aug. 30,1909, to be exact, was the last day the price of a haircut was 20 cents in Windber. The next day, the price was raised to 25 cents. Haircutting shops also decided to close on all holidays unless they fell on Monday or Saturday. • November 19Ó9 Windber-born Johnny Weissmuller (Tarzan) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., a Cambria County All-Sports Hall of Famer, was named International Commissioner of Marathon Swimming by the World Professional Marathon Swimming Federation. •June 1910 Scalp Level/Paint Borough School Board elected Ray Claycomb as principal for the coming school year at a salary of $75 a month. Miss Grace Clapper of Paint Borough and Miss Ina Nupp of Windber were hired as elementary teachers at $55 and $50 a month, respectively. Congratulations to Blaise DiNinno (pictured), son of Mr. and Mrs. Blaise DiNinno of Central City, Pa., who graduated from Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics on June 23,2011. Blaise is a member of Branch 59. He earned an associate's degree in specialized technology and is now employed at Micron in Manassas, Va., as an associate engineer. Micron is one of the world's leading manufacturers of advanced memory semi-conductors. They also attract the leading minds in electronics design, manufacturing and marketing. Blaise's grandmother is Phyllis DiNinno of Windber. William Penn Association has celebrated its 125th anniversary. Their annual fraternal picnic is now history, and what a truly memorable one it was. Even the weather cooperated. The crowd of approximately 1,350 or so all seemed to have a great time. The food was beyond outstanding, and the Rajkó Zenekar from Budapest was superior. I could have danced all night to their music. Again, Endre Csornán did his usual superb job to make it all happen—a class act, for sure. Barbara House, the new Chair of WPA, and her crew orchestrated the Chinese auction to its being one of the "highlights" of the day. And, if you were one of the lucky winners, congratulations to you! I was especially excited about the day as my sister Betty and her husband Sid of Arizona attended for the first time, and other family members and good friends were coming aboard the Michigan and Ohio buses, as well as family members from the Pittsburgh, DuBois and Johnstown areas. We had a wonderful minireunion. The next day I drove to Michigan for my youngest grandson Alex's fifth birthday. I also got to watch my two older grandsons, Scott and Stephen, play football and watch my granddaughter, Sam, prepare for a swimming competition. Christmas and the year-end holidays are fast approaching. I love the hustle and bustle of holiday shoppers and just everything that goes with making the holidays what they truly are—a time for remembering Jesus, the "reason for the season" - and all the family gatherings all over the world. I will be in Michigan with my family. I hope Santa will be good to all his children. And, finally, as we wind down 2011, and prepare for the year-end celebrations and the New Year 2012, I want to extend warm and festive holiday greetings to all WPA members, their families and friends. Kellemes Karácsony és Boldog újévet! Branch 132 South Bend, In by the Officers of Branch 132 The children of Branch 132 were happy with the Halloween favors sent by the Home Office. Our thanks for remembering them. Our branch meetings have been changed to the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. The meetings are held at the Martin's Supermarket Café on Ireland Road. Because of our stormy Northern Indiana winters, there will be no meetings in January and February. A speedy recovery to Bob Horvath, who underwent foot surgery. The officers of Branch 132 wish all WPA families and friends a Happy Christmas and a prosperous and healthy New Year. William Penn Life 0 December 2011 0 19
